Early Times Report

Jammu, May 23: The Education Minister Naeem Akther, who after taking over the charge of the prestigious ministry promised to revolutionize the education system in the state, was caught on a wrong foot on Saturday, as an order issued by his ministry mentioned Islamabad instead of Anantnag.
The department in a transfer order No. 245-Edu of 2015 dated 23-05-2015 of in-charge principals issued on Saturday signed by Shaleen Kabra has described the historic Anantnag district as Islamabad.
Sources told Early Times that Education Minister and the former PDP spokesman is well aware about the attempts being made to change the names of the district. “It seems minister has maintained silence over the issue to send a signal to separatists that their agenda is being taken forward,” opined a critic.
“The government led by PDP is trying to create disturbance in the Jammu region from the day it has assumed office. This is a deliberate attempt of the education department. It is a game plan to change the historical names of cities and towns in Kashmir to suit the interests of separatists”, said Sham Lal Sharma former cabinet minister and senior leader of the Congress party.
Pertinently, this has not happened for the first time various government departments in official communication in the past use Islamabad instead of Anantnag despite the widespread public resentment in Ladakh and Jammu region.
Criticizing the education department’s role, Sham Lal Sharma alleged that the PDP led government is trying to play with the sentiments of the peace loving and secular people of the state as the department is implementing the agenda of separatists in JK.
The nationalist forces in the state while taking a serious exception to the state education department action said that this has hurt their sentiments as a government department was not supposed to change the name.
The said action of the education department has put the secular credentials of the offices at the helm of officers in doubt and the people want strict action against those officials who have deliberately tried to rake another controversy by writing Anantnag as Islamabad.
The name of Anantnag has been mentioned over 1700 years back in Neelmat Puran one of the ancient books on history of Kashmir and same has also been mentioned by Dr Ved Kumari Ghai at three places in her book which is the translation of Neelmat Puran. The book has been published by JK Academy of Art Culture and languages.
The verses in Neelmat Puran describe the sacred nature of Anantnag , the importance of visiting the tirath and the merits acquired by worshiping there and the present Anantnag is built around this holy site, he added.
This way it has become clear that Anantnag is an ancient place which has been known for 1700 years past and the town is named after a holy spring which has great religious significance as per Neelmat Puran.
Attempts to contact Shaleen Kabra secretary education department proved futile while MoS education Priya Sethi dropped the phone after Early Times raised the query.
