Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 23: A day after Defence Minister Manjor Parikkar stirred a hornet’s nest by revealing that terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir would be handled in a different way, opposition parties on Saturday tried to corner the PDP-BJP government by alleging that coalition government wants to revive “Ikhwan rule” in the state. However, PDP dispelled the notion saying that “It’s not possible.” The PDP Chief Spokesman, Dr Mehboob Beg while talking to early times said, “Reviving Ikhwan) is impossible under the Chief Ministership of Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.”
“I don’t know in which context defence Minister has said this, It is impossible that Mufti Muhammad Syed would allow reviving Ikhwan Raj in Jammu and Kashmir as Mufti Sayeed ended Ikhwan Raj during his previous government,” he added.
Beg clarified, “In a democratic set up, you always need to deal with internal matters of the region cautiously. Its democratic set up that allows politicians to motivate people for voting. People of JK have reposed faith in the political system by voting in huge numbers in 2014 assembly polls.”
Pertinently, Defence Minister, Manohar Parikar had recently said: “Our proactive attitude is to identify terrorists and then effectively neutralize them. Every case is handled firmly with clear-cut intelligence for targeted kills, we ensure minimal collateral damage,You have to neutralize terrorist through terrorist only. Why my soldier has to do it all the time.”
Minutes after this statement of Defence Minister, Former Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah on Friday said that “Looks like (Chief Minister) Mufti (Mohammad) Syed (sic) is reviving & empowering the Ikhwanis (counter-insurgents). That's the only way to carry out 'terrorists killing terrorists' policy of MOD.”
On the same issue today, CPI (M) state secretary, M Y Tarigami said that ‘Defence minister needs to explain the contours of his remarks and elaborate the context in which he has made this loaded statement and added that such statements are totally indefensible and reflect the hegemonic mindset of a section in power in New Delhi who are hell-bent to vitiate the atmosphere in Jammu and Kashmir.’
Independent MLA of langate Constituency, Engineer Rasheed known for his fiery reactions termed Parrikar’s remarks unacceptable and said that ‘intentions are clear that Government of india intends to revive counter insurgency and is in search of Kuka Parrays and other renegades of their times.”
Reacting to the remarks of Omar Abdullah, Education Minister, Naeem Akhter on Friday said that ‘everyone in the state knows the parentage of Ikhwan and no one should have any doubt about it that it was national conference which unleashed terror in Kashmir for six years continuously, from 1996 to 2002- NC had established structure of their own and it was Mufti Muhammad Sayeed who ended it all and people heaved a sigh of relief.’
