Early Times Report

Jammu, May 25 : The Ravi Tawi Irrigation Complex (RTIC) of Irrigation Department, Jammu, has set up three water lifting stations -- two at Ravi river and one at Tawi -- to meet the irrigation facilities of Kandi areas of Jammu region but due to old pumping machinery and frequent curtailment of power, the lift stations have lifted 50 per cent irrigation water only as a result of which most of the kandi farmers have been deprived of irrigation facilities in peak summer season. The potential of the lift stations was 1,000 cusecs of water when they were established. Of these 1,000 cusecs of water, 5oo cusecs is lifted by Basantpur lifting station, 200 by Lakhanpur lifting station in Kathua and 300 by Tawi lifting station but till date only 50 per cent water has been lifted from both the rivers. The 50 per cent shortfall has deprived the farmers of tail end villages of the irrigation facilities.
A source in the department informed Early Times that notwithstanding of networks of distributaries canals in kandi areas, the farmers of the tail end villages have not been accessed the facilities of irrigation, adding, "Those who have not accessed the water facilities are still depending on monsoon season.
He said all the farmers were paying money (awana) against the use of water which was fixed by department but in return it had failed to provide the facilities of irrigation."Due to lackadaisical approach of the department, the employees who go to collect charges are facing the wrath of farmers but the department is not bothered to redress their grievances.
"Due to the paucity of irrigation water, farmers of the tail end villages were compelled to produce maize, bajra rather than paddy crops", further said.
When contacted, RTIC Chief Engineer H C Jeerath said that he had joined the office only yesterday and was unaware about the matter
