Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 27: Even as Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Jammu today, the state government allowed separatist leaders to kick-start fresh spell of mega anti-India programs in Kashmir.
The Hurriyat Conference (M) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq started a series of anti-India programs from central Kashmir's Budgam district. The Peoples Democratic Party- Bharatiya Janta Party alliance has allowed the Hurriyat (M) to go ahead with the anti-national programs just two days after a PDP officer bearer showered praise on Mirwaiz.
Mirwaiz flanked by other separatist leaders including Prof Abdul Gani Bhat and Molvi Masroor Abbas Ansari rallied in Beerwah and other areas of Budgam marking the commencement of Hurriyat's "Delegate Session" even as they announced that such rallies would be held in every nook and corner of Kashmir. "Speaking on the occasion, senior Hurriyat leader Prof Abdul Gani Bhat said that Hurriyat is the collective representative body of the aspirations of the people. He said that the public contact campaign has been started with a well planned strategy to reach out to the common masses as the movement was standing at a critical juncture where right steps have to be taken to take the struggle to a logical conclusion," the party handout said.
In his address the Mirwaiz said, "Our nation is engaged in the freedom struggle for the past many decades."
Terming Kashmir as a "police state", Mirwaiz stated that "Kashmir is being ruled through the heavy hand of Army and Police."
On May 24, a controversial video surfaced in which the ruling PDP General Secretary Nizam ud Din Bhat told a group of women in distress to seek help from Mirwaiz, saying the "people here have lost compassion."
"Mirwaiz will be better... he will help you. Get some help first so that you can move around. The people here have lost compassion," Bhat had told a group of women. The women, hailing from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, are married to local Kashmiri youths who had crossed the LoC for arms training but returned to the Valley after the State government announced an amnesty scheme for them.
Last week, offices falling under the control of Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh who is also the Minister for Housing facilitated arrangements for the separatist rallies carried out by the Mirwaiz faction in Srinagar's downtown.
For the past few months, mainstream and separatist leaders are often seen together. When this new government took over many separatists reportedly visited the villas of the winning candidates.
The bonhomie is visible even in times of grief. Last month a battery of separatist leaders attended the funeral of Muhammad Yousuf Shah, the father- in- law of R&B Minister Syed Altaf Bukhari. From the Hurriyat Conference led by Mirwaiz, senior leaders including Prof Abdul Gani Bhat, Bilal Gani Lone and Shahid-ul-Islam participated in the funeral at Sanat Nagar here.
