Early Times Report

Jammu, May 27: The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh (LAHDC) chief executive councilor Rigzin Spalbar has said that Ladkah's top most prirority is Union Territory status for Ladakh
Rigzin said that that though the region too needs All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), but for getting the UT status for Ladakh would serve the purpose of Ladhakis in much broader spectrum.
"Ladakh is a unique territory, entirely different from the rest of the state. Establishing of AIIMS is a priority requirement of this region as the area remains cut-off for seven months in a year and Ladhakis remain deprived of good health care," said Rigzin Spalbar to Early Times adding that if the UT status is given to Ladakh , it copuld have its own infrastructural depth to meet every challenge.
"Our foremost demand is getting UT status for Ladakh. We are fighting for the cause and sooner we get, we would have our own paraphernalia for aid and development," said LAHDC chief executive councilor.
He said only air connectivity is one option to reach or leave Ladakh which is unaffordable for all.
Spalbar said, since independence, Ladakh has always been ignored on all fronts.
"Leave aside any developmental aid, no government in Centre or state has been able to provide an all-weather road even to the region," lamented Spalbar.
It is pertinent to mention that recently elevated BJP cabinet minister for cooperatives Chering Dorjay too has voiced the same sentiments for the people of ladakh . He said that UT status for Ladakh has been the long pending demand of the region.
Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar who was recently on Ladakh trip was submitted a memorandum by the Hill Council a list of demands which had UT status on the priority.
On needs of AIIMS and other institutions like central university, IIM, IIT etc, for Ladakh, Spalbar said the region is located on high altitude mountainous terrain, and since it faces hostility from neighboring countries, like China and Pakistan, the Union government needs to pump in all its infrastructural and developmental resources here to make it a self-sufficient region in all aspects.
"Arms, ammunition and army are not the only solution to safeguard people on borders here, but they need best healthcare, education and upgraded living standards so that they feel secure and comfortable at their home," said Spalbar.
The LAHDC chief executive councilor minced no word in blaming the Centre and state government for seeing Ladakh through the prism of Kashmir only.
"It is through Kashmir-centric politics only under which Ladakh has been treated always. Earlier, Jammu too used to be on the same page. But, since there is the BJP-PDP coalition, Jammu is being considered, again neglecting Ladakh," said Spalbar on a query over Jammu and Kashmir both being given AIIMS, while leaders are silent on Ladakh.
BJP MP and BJP state president Jugal Kishore Sharma had said that both Jammu and Kashmir would get AIIMS on Tuesday.
He, however, did not commit anything for Ladakh, the third important region of Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP in the recently-held state assembly elections failed to get any seat out of four from the Ladakh region. However, the party inducted Chering Dorjay from Leh as an MLC and later elevated him to the rank of cabinet minister for cooperatives.
The Ladakh autonomous hill development council (LAHDC) is an autonomous hill council that administers the Leh district.
