Non-serious JU admin forgets 13 colleges of Doda, Reasi; puts semester system in cold-storage | | | Syed Junaid Hashmi
Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 28: Already facing serious road connectivity issues, non-serious and laid-back attitude of Jammu University (JU) administration has put future of students of 13 degree colleges of four districts of Jammu region in jeopardy. Jammu University started semester system for under graduate courses in all the colleges falling in the summer zone in Jammu region from the academic session 2014-15. These colleges have successfully implemented the semester system and completed the first year of the undergraduate courses. But for reasons best known to the ex-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mohan Pal Singh Isher and his incumbent Prof. R.D.Sharma, this system is yet to be made functional in the colleges falling in the winter zone of Jammu region. 13 colleges falling in four most backward districts of Jammu and Kashmir namely Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban and Reasi are yet to adopt the semester system. They are continuing with the old system of three year degree course. Ask for the reasons and officials working in these 13 colleges of Jammu region unanimously said that Jammu University has adopted partisan attitude towards these backward and mountainous districts of Jammu region for the reasons best known to them. Those 13 colleges which fall in the winter zone in Jammu region include Degree College Doda, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar, Ramban, Banihal, Dharmari, Sarh Bagga Mahore, Kilhotran, Thathri, Chatroo, Marwah and Gool. These colleges are yet to start semester system despite the colleges in 7 other districts of Jammu region having completed 1 year of the semester based system. The districts where colleges have adopted semester based system include Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Udhampur, Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi town. "Neither ex-VC nor the present VC bothered to hold consultations with us over this new semester based system of examination. We have absolutely no knowledge about this new system. Irony is that even this new VC is yet to start formal discussions with us. What we are being told is that a notification would be issued and we would have to implement the system, little realizing the fact that it is not easy to replace existing system without equipping the implementing agencies with the knowledge of this new system," said a College Principal seeking anonymity. Terrified with what he described as dictatorial and non-serious attitude of the new VC, the College Principal said that VC should have prioritised college education of erstwhile District Doda and several far-flung areas of District Reasi but from his Special Assistant Jai Kumar Sharma to the rest of staff, all are playing with the career of the students belonging to these most backward parts of Jammu region. He opined that VC cannot dictate. "He should engage us and hold dialogue before issuing any notification. If we are not consulted, the system won't be implemented. Our session start from June while as the session in Jammu start in August. We have winter breaks while Jammu has summer breaks. There is gap of around two months and the same makes the entire exercise futile," said another Principal. He stressed that either JU should stop taking us for granted or else we would take up the issue with higher ups in the higher education. |
