Row over AIIMS may spell a doom for BJP
5/29/2015 12:21:03 AM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 28: The AIIMS issue is likely to spell a doom for BJP in the state which got 25 seats in last year's Assembly elections from Jammu region and three Lok Sabha seats including both the two from Jammu and one from Ladakh region.
However, with the party's failure to plead the cause of Jammu region which it claimed to have been championing right from Paraja Parisahd movement in 1952 is likely to mar its future prospects, according to political analysts.
"Pinning high hopes in the Party, the Jammu people were thinking that there will be overall change in administrative front after BJP joins power, but much to the chagrin of the people this has not happened," is the majority opinion in Jammu these days.
Even BJP activists who had shown much enthusiasm in both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to ensure victory of the party by launching a door to door campaign feel dejected now after the party surrendered everything for the sake of power.
"No one in BJP seems to talk of Jammu's 'aan, baan and shan' now and everything for them is power and power for which the leadership struggled for over six decades.
"The great fault by the BJP state leadership is the surrender of AIIMS to Kashmir despite the fact that the Jammu had a strong case for it," said Dimpy Kohli, president Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray).
He said there is already one medical institute in Kashmir region and the facilities at GMC Srinagar are better than Jammu. Besides, Srinagar has separate maternity hospital, children's hospital and Bone and Joint Hospital while Jammu has no such facilities.
"There is more advanced machinery in Kashmir hospitals than Jammu and still the AIIMS was also shifted to Kashmir and Jammu ignored which sans the better medicare facilities," Kohli added.
He said the Jammu people had never thought that BJP will play a second fiddle to PDP as Congress used to do by supporting anti-Jammu policies of both NC and PDP just to remain in power. But the people of Jammu have become more conscious now and they have seen through the game plan of BJP. "The party can no longer mislead the people with its catchy slogans," he added.
Satish Poonchi, chairman Jammu Kashmir Peoples Forum (JKPF) said BJP was misleading people of Jammu on AIIMS issue and the same can be construed from recent press conference of party's national spokesperson and MP Meenakshi Lekhi who suggested setting up of AIIMS at a centrally located place in the state.
"If this can be done then the same falls in Kashmir and Jammu's cause will be again harmed as Kashmir is central place in three regions of the state," he added.
Poonchi said people of Jammu are not averse to establishing of AIIMS at Kashmir but at the same time they too should be given equal rights. "In case government continues to debar them from their rights they will not hesitate in giving any sacrifice for restoration of the same," he said..
Poonchi, while criticizing the government in general and BJP in particular said though the new government is in office for last three months there is no improvement in power scenario and people in rural belt continue to face 12 to 15 hour power cut in 24 hours. Same is the case with water supply, he added.
"There is hardly any day left in this scorching heat when people do not take to the streets to protest power and water crisis, but government is unmoved," Poonchi added.
