Oppressed scribes pin hopes on Mufti Sayed | Have things changed for journos? | | Early Times Report Srinagar, June 29: If a cabinet minister's willingness to tender unconditional apology to a scribe who was beaten by his escort last week is any indicator, then it is quite safe to presume that things have changed in three-month Mufti rule. The incident took place on the bypass road when the scribe was travelling in his car with his wife. The minister's escort intercepted the car and gave the scribe a sound thrashing. The matter was agitated by the fourth estate. The protest did not go in vain. It has been learnt by reliable sources that mufti Muhammad Sayed expressed serious displeasure on the incident forcing the minister to issue a statement expressing readiness to apologise. This is in total contrast to the previous regime in which as many as twenty-five assaults were made on the scribes especially during the 2010 agitation. During the previous regime, the state legislature issued three breach of privilege notices to scribes including the former bureau chief of the Early Times in Srinagar. The Chief Minister has also expressed dismay over manhandling of a scribe in downtown Srinagar the other day by a police source. It is believed that the Chief Minister has sought stern action against the culprit. Mufti Sayed made clear his intention in the first month in office by ordering arrest of two police men allegedly involved in the killing of a Narbal boy. |
