Srinagar, June 30: Police have claimed to have caught the real life avatar of movie Bunty Aur Babli, a fraudster couple, who duped scores of businessmen in Kashmir. While husband, identified as Tahir Amin of Batamalo has been arrested, manhunt is on to nab the other accused, his wife. Police said the couple had duped scores of people by pretending to be rich. They would offer businessmen including shopkeepers cheque instead of cash for purchases worth millions. A police spokesman said on June 24 Saddar Police station received an application from Mudasir Wani of Zeenat Ornaments Chana Pora stating therein that Tahir Amin and his wife purchased ornaments from his shop worth 6,35,000 on May 29, 2015. "The duo paid Rs. 235,000 in cash and gave cheques to him worth Rs. 4,00,000 lacs. However the cheques bounced. When I tried to contact the couple, it went into hiding," the complainant told police. "On receipt of this information a case vide FIR No 107/2015 was registered in PS Sadder and investigation taken up. During the course of investigation, it surfaced that the duo with the help of others has duped several other people in similar manner," said a police official. He said the couple had adopted a unique modus operandi. "Pretending to be very rich and travelling in luxury cars, the couple visited the shops especially the ones selling golden ornaments, high-end smart phones, copper etc. They purchased the valuables paid the dues partly in cash and the remaining major portion through cheques. And in all cases the cheques bounced," police said, adding the couple would frequently change their rented accommodation. "They had gone notorious as Bunty Aur Babli," the police official said. He said the husband confessed during interrogation that they got inspiration on how to dupe people by watching movies like Bunty Aur Babli. The duo has duped people from Kulgam, Budgam, Mehjoor Nager, Chanapora, Wathoora etc. Reports suggest that more complaints are expected to surface against this conman and his associates. When contacted SDPO Sadder Dawood Ayoub said the concerned police station alone has received over half a dozen complaints of duping. "Though this couple hails from Batamaloo, they have been so frequently changing their residence that over the years nobody could trap them," the official told Early Times. He said hunt was on to nab the accused woman. "More arrests are expected as it seems to be a big network of fraudsters," he said. |
