Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 3: Revelation of the former RAW Chief A S Dulat that self styled Commander-in-Chief of Hizbul Mujahideen Syed Salahuddin had approached the Chief of Intelligence Bureau in Srinagar to seek admission for his son to a Kashmir medical college during Dr Farooq Abdullah's tenure (1996-2002) has created ripples in the Valley.
Dulat's revelation, that then Chief Minister Dr Farooq had obliged the Hizb Chief after he was advised to do so, has exposed one of the senior most militant commanders, who before joining the militant ranks was a teacher by profession and contested the assembly elections in 1987 unsuccessfully on the ticket of Muslim United Front.
Salahuddin, who hails from Soibugh, a small hamlet in central Kashmir's Budgam district, had crossed over to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in early nineties and has been instrumental in providing arms training to the Kashmiri youth to wage a war against India.
"It's strange that on one hand you fight against the Indian rule and on the other hand you seek favour from the Indian government to secure the future of your son," said an analyst.
"If Dulat is telling the truth then Salahuddin has to answer the parents of hundreds of youth who were given the guns and they ended up in graves, while for his own son he preferred a medical seat who is presently living a dignified life," the analyst added.
He said like Salahuddin wards of many separatists in Kashmir are living a lavish life and are government servants. "Most of them were favored by the rulers in Jammu and Kashmir. It's unfortunate that separatists are as powerful as mainstream politicians in the turmoil hit state of Jammu and Kashmir. Anyone goes out of way to favour them, " the analyst added.
Commenting on the revelation of the former RAW chief an official wishing not to be named said: "Separatists seeking favours for their kith and kin is nothing new. It has been happening in JK for the past two decades. Many separatists get themselves placed under house arrest when they feel that their life is under threat. Many people within the separatist ranks are on the payroll of various agencies. One hopes like Salahuddin they too would get exposed before the common people."
He claimed that many separatists have built big mansions, hotels and shopping complexes across Kashmir during the past two decades. "People of Jammu and Kashmir have realized that separatists have taken them for a ride during all these years. Now masses don't take them seriously anymore," the official added.
A politician said that Dulat's assertion is just a tip of the iceberg if the people who have served in Jammu and Kashmir during the past two decades start narrating how the people who claim to be fighting for Kashmiris have sought "petty favours" from the government and other agencies the myth about so-called "freedom struggle" would get punctured within no time.
"It's unfortunate that everyone since 1990's has taken the people of Jammu and Kashmir for a ride. So called fighters first ensured that Kashmiri Pandits leave the Valley then they labeled many Kashmiri Muslims=as informers and killed them. It was done to establish their writ and to ensure that terror rules the roost. No stone was left unturned to add to the miseries of the inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir and make life difficult for them," he said. "Someone needs to ask these so called militant commanders and separatist leaders how many of their own relatives have been killed during the past 22-years of turmoil in Jammu and Kashmir. People who became commanders and leaders looked for green pastures for their kith and kin and ensured that their nears and dears remain safe and sound.
