One militant, one army man killed in Uri encounter

BARAMULLA, July 3: One suspected militant and a soldier were killed in a gun battle after a group of 4-5 infiltrators tried to sneak into this side of Kashmir near Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of north Kashmir's Baramulla district today in the morning.
A senior army official told Early Times that during the intervening night of July 2 and 3, a group of 4-5 infiltrators were intercepted after they sneaked in to this part of Kashmir near Noori post (Line of Control) in Chotali village in Boniyar Tehsil of Baramulla district by army's 8 Sikh Regiment.
"After being challenged, the group of suspected ultras opened heavy volume of fire upon the security forces. The fire was retaliated from both the sides ensuing fierce gunfight that continued for several hours on Friday morning," said official.
Meanwhile, a top police official said that security forces foiled an infiltration bid in which a heavily 4-5 armed militants had sneaked into this side of Line of Control (LoC) was intercepted by the alert troops during the intervening night of July 2 and 3.
He said as the army zeroed in on the hiding militants, they fired upon the forces and in the ensuing gun battle a militant and a soldier were reportedly killed while as one militant and an army jawan was injured.
The body of the killed militant has not been recovered yet, the official said, adding, the operation is under way, till the last reports came in. The soldier who got killed in Chotali was identified as Harpreet Singh of 8 Sikh regiment.
However, official further said that the area has a robust counter infiltration grid and the infiltration was detected within meters of the Line of Control.
Meanwhile, on the late evening of July 2, security forces personnel cordoned off Delina area of Baramulla District for most wanted militant, Qayoom Najjar, who is allegedly involved in the recent killings in Sopore town.
Sources said that Police and Army after getting information that Najjar was travelling in a Sumo and was on way to Delina area to a particular locality, laid ambush but Najjar reportedly disembarked from the vehicle in a nearby locality.
Police and Army immediately cordoned off few houses in the locality where he disembarked from the Sumo but he was not found there, sources informed. The cordon was lifted but immediately laid around Delina and surrounding areas after reports that he was still inside the locality.
