Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 4: Shopkeepers in the Maisuma area of summer capital downed their shutters for a brief period of time after an altercation broke out between one of the shopkeepers and an activist of Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) over an issue of donation.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that in the afternoon 3-4 activists of JKLF appeared in the Maisuma area and demanded donation from the shopkeepers. As the JKLF activists were busy in colleting the donation money from the shopkeepers one of them resisted the demand for the donation.
The shopkeeper said that the donation should not be demanded but instead it should be left to the wish of the people who want to donate for the same. He strongly objected to the diktats of one of the JKLF activists who wanted him to donate according to his directive. There was an altercation between the shopkeeper and the JKLF activist.
The mini-scuffle between the two caught the attention of the people who were on the shop and also of the shopkeepers in the Maisuma area. The shopkeepers also objected to the diktats of the JKLF activist and said that they would not take any dictation even if the same is from any leader or activist of JKLF.
The shopkeepers without wasting any time headed towards the office of the JKLF located in the vicinity. The shopkeepers expressed their displeasure over the attitude of the said JKLF activist and raised the issue with JKLF Chairman, Mohammad Yasin Malik. Malik assured the shopkeepers that such things would not be repeated. He even reprimanded his activist for his attitude towards the shopkeeper of the Maisuma area.
Following the assurance from Malik and some other leaders of JKLF the shopkeepers pulled up the shutters of their shops and resumed their business. The shopkeepers told the JKLF Chairman that they would not like any dictation from any person whatsoever. They asked Malik to rein in the 'rogue' elements within his organization so that there are no misgivings in the future.
The shopkeepers appreciated the move of the shopkeeper who refused to take directives from the JKLF activist and raised his voice against the alleged coercion. They said the shopkeepers of the area should be united so that they could defeat the nefarious designs of the people who want to dictate terms to them. The shopkeepers carried on with their business for the rest of the day without any further interference.
