BJP led NDA Govt dumps separatists in dustbin | | | ET Report Jammu, July 4: When the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, announced that the Government of India was for improving ties with Pakistan through talks but had no plan to hold parleys with the Kashmiri separatists, was he simply conveying to Islamabad that for India separatists are a spent-up lot? It seems so because during the last over one year Islamabad has been trying to maintain its relations with separatists by providing to them moral, material and diplomatic support. At one point of time New Delhi called off the proposed foreign secretary level talks after the Pakistan High Commissioner in New Delhi invited senior Kashmiri separatist leaders for talks in August last.Over year ago New Delhi had conveyed to Islamabad its resentment over Pakistan's attempt at building bridges with separatists who were simply trying to establish their relevance and presence by indulging in anti-India activities. This resentment was reflected in the cancellation of proposed foreign secretary level talks in August last. India desires cordial relations with Pakistan but said Islamabad "will have to change its approach" for this to happen, Home Minister Rajnath Singh has said.."I want to say from the depth of my heart that we want good and friendly relations with Pakistan. It is our policy to have cordial relations with all our neighbouring countries, including Pakistan," Singh has stated. He pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif to attend his swearing-in ceremony in May 2014 to "demonstrate our (India's) urge for peaceful and normal relations with that country."We made our intentions clear on the day of the oath-taking ceremony (of Modi). If it was not our intention to improve relations with Pakistan, perhaps our prime minister would not have invited Sharif," he said Why this change from the policies that had been adopted by the BJP when Atal Behari Vajpayee was the Prime Minister ? During the era Vajpayee headed the central Government there were series of meetings between the Kashmiri separatists and the Government of India.A number of meetings were held by the separatists with the then Deputy Prime Minister,L.K.Advani.These meetings were held during the Congress led UPA Government led by Manmohan Singh. However, since 2006 the channels of dialogue between the centre and the separatists st and choked. Two factors seems to have motivated the BJP led NDA Government to shut the doors of dialogue with separatists. The Modi led Government has come to believe that the separatisrs are a spent-up force and simply have some nuisance value. And by inviting them to talks their nuisance value increases. Secondly,New Delhi has realised that if the process of dialogue with Pakistan proved result oriented it could yield peace in the entire South Asian region, especially in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.New Delhi believes even if it is able to win over separatists Islamabad may not accept it as a solution to the Kashmir issue.Hence it is better to hold talks with Pakistan for promoting peace in the region. Developed nations, especially the US,are in favour of resolving bilateral problems between India and Pakistan through talks. Once the separatists are sidelined and ignored Islamabad would lose a support base in the Kashmir valley and this is the policy that is being followed by the Government led by Narendra Modi. |
