Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 5: To reap political benefit of the human tragedy, BJP had shamelessly exploited the case of custodial death of Ranjeesh Kumar of Jammu in Ram Munshi Bagh Police Station of Srinagar in the year 2009. But after attaining power, BJP has maintained a criminal silence on the issue and none of the party leader has so far approach the helpless family which has been moving from pillar to post to get justice.
Rajneesh Kumar was arrested by Kashmir Police on the intervening night of 29-30 September, 2009 from Rehari in Jammu region. Rajneesh belonged to a lower middle class family and was a Aluminium trader in Jammu. Rajneesh had been going to Srinagar for several years. Rajneesh and Ameena, a local Kashmir girl, fell in love and both had decided to get married. The marriage was solemnized on August 21, 2009 at Arya Samaj temple, Janipur, Jammu.
Ameena's father lodged an FIR at Ram Munshi Bagh Police station accusing Rajneesh and his family of kidnapping his daughter. Murtaza Ahmed was the SHO and Javed Riyaz Bedar was SP, Srinagar. ASI Abdul was deputed to go to Jammu. In collaboration with the local police, he started harassing Rajneesh's family.
The then police officers, Shashi Thakur, SHO and SDPO Shiv Kumar Chauhan of Bakshi Nagar police station started raiding the family and illegally arresting its members. On 2nd October, Rajeesh's brother-in-law (Jija and also his business partner) Kaushal Kumar Sharma was arrested by the police without registering the case and taken to Srinagar. The family hired lawyers from Jammu and went to Srinagar for securing a bail. The case, however, could not be taken up due to the strong opposition from the local lawyers.
The family members were somehow released by Ranjeesh was allegedly killed by the police in custody. Two post-mortems were conducted on the body of the Rajneesh, one in Srinagar and one in Jammu. The findings suggest severe torture-burning by cigarette butts and hanging upside & down.
Gruesome murder of Rajneesh created anger among residents of Jammu and BJP was first to take political benefit of that inhuman killing of a local Dogra youth.
Now when BJP has attained power in Jammu and Kashmir, a ray of hope again rekindled among family members of the deceased youth to get justice. Those who were responsible, directly or indirectly, for the gruesome murder of Jammu youth, are roaming freely and BJP leadership too has not again take up the case. Supreme Court has also ordered CBI investigation in this case but BJP leadership has not followed the case.
