Early Times Report
Banihal, July 6: Heavy rains, that lashed Banihal and its upper reaches last night, damaged standing crops in the area and also triggered landslides at some places, leading to the closure of national highway for a few hours.
Official sources said due to heavy rains, standing crop of maize and paddy was damaged in some villages of Banihal. As landslides occurred at some places, the highway was too closed for a few hours, the sources added.
Unconfirmed reports, however, said the heavy rush of water at some places was due to a cloud burst in the upper reaches of Arbal and Chareel villages. Some culverts and foot-bridges were also said to have suffered damages in the rains.
Chareel residents today staged a demonstration on the highway against the adminstration for not visiting their village to assess the losses they had suffered. They burnt tyres on the road and protested for more than two hours, disrupting vehicular traffic. They were demanding relief.
The road, which had been cleared of landslides and made traffic worthy, was blocked by the protesters for over two hours. They lifted their dharna after Banihal SDM, tehsildar and SDPO Choudhary Rafiq visited the spot and assured them that their demand would be taken up with the government.
DSP traffic (National Highway) said that due to rains, landslides occurred at more than five places between Nowgam and Banihal. The landslides were cleared and road was made traffic worthy, he added.
Sources said maize and paddy crops, besides fruit, suffered extensive damage. A cow shed of one Ghulam Nabi Naik washed away in the flash flood triggered by the rains.
