Separatists plan major 'show of unity' on July 17

Early Times Report
srinagar, July 6: The divided separatists in Kashmir are planning a major "show of unity" at historic Jamia Masjid here on July 17, which coincides with Jamat-ul-Vida, the last Friday of Ramadan.
Sources said prompted by the instructions of his handlers, senior separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today started deliberations with his close aides to invite rivals including Syed Ali Geelani, Mohammed Yasin Malik and Shabir Shah to the central mosque for "show of power" before the mammoth gathering expected on the big day when tens of thousands of people turn up for the congregational prayers there.
The Hurriyat Conference (Mirwaiz faction) is likely to call an emergency meeting of its executive body to finalize the modalities to realize the plan.
Sources said though the efforts for show of unity were underway, the move got a shot in the arm with the statement by incarcerated separatist leader Dr Mohammad Qasim Faktoo, who recently asked the Mirwaiz to take a lead on this front.
Chief of Muslim Deeni Mahaz, Qasim who is serving life imprisonment, in a statement from the Central Jail Srinagar urged "pro-freedom leadership to unite against the anti-Muslim maneuverings of PDP and RSS."
Qasim, a Geelani loyalist, has surprised many by softening his stand towards Mirwaiz. In fact this time, he has requested Mirwaiz for the "benevolent gesture of sending invite."
"These leaders should jointly address the people and make them aware about the agenda of PDP and RSS and promulgate a joint strategy to tackle this agenda. This invitation will be a benevolent gesture from Mirwaiz, showing his commitment to this movement and thus creating a historic opportunity," Qasim was quoted by his spokesman as having said.
"The pace at which the RSS and PDP are working jointly on an anti-Muslim agenda requires resistance camp to work against it under a joint strategy," Qasim said.
"If pro-India political parties, departments, agencies and media can work jointly in prolonging the occupation of Jammu Kashmir why can't the resistance organizations fight this operation united," he added.
Insiders said Mirwaiz, who for the past few months has been fast losing his party cadres to Geelani's Hurriyat, couldn't believe that Qasim wants him to do something for "Kashmir cause".
"Elated to receive Qasim's statement, Mirwaiz at once decided to give his best to the plan," they said.
Sources said some in the ruling coalition who want to be in the good books of separatists are lobbying that separatist be allowed to share the Jamia Masjid platform on the scheduled date.
But police is on tenterhooks. "Any such event can snowball into a major anti-India rally which will be too difficult for police to tackle because on Jamat-ul-Vida it has always been mammoth gathering at the Jamia," said a police official, adding that a decision in this regard would have to be taken by the government.
