Early Times Report
jammu, July 6: Contrary to the tall claims of BJP ministers, not even a single word has been mentioned regarding construction of artificial lake on the river Tawi in the recently held meeting of the District Development Board (DDB) for Jammu district. Not making any provision for artificial lake in the DDB meeting has raised questions over statements of BJP's ministers, who have been repeatedly claiming that artificial lake would be constructed at any cost. DDB is highest decision making body and not touching the issue of artificial lake is clear indication that government has not given its consent to the "unfeasible" project.
On May 15 when Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had stated the artificial lake project on the Tawi in Jammu was not feasible, all BJP ministers reacted very strongly. Deputy Chief Minister, who was present in the press conference when Chief Minister had raised question over feasibility over the project, had rushed to Delhi to meet Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti to get the project approved.
Taking on Chief Minister for questioning the feasibility of artificial lake on the Tawi, Minister for Public Health Engineering (PHE), Irrigation and Flood Control Sukhnandan Kumar Choudhary on May 23 asserted that the project would be completed as per the plan.
At a high-level meeting at Jammu, Choudhary reviewed the status of the Tawi Barrage project also known as the artificial lake project on the same day. The minister had directed the officers to complete the project as per the plan within a stipulated timeframe. Before the meeting, Choudhary along with senior functionaries visited the site of the project to take stock of the works done.
The minister said the barrage-cum-lake project would be constructed as per the plan and bottlenecks, if any, would be removed at the earliest. He told the Irrigation Department to proceed ahead by taking into consideration all the technicalities to avoid any problems in its completion.
The minister had also directed the departments concerned to complete their respective works to facilitate the completion of the barrage and poundage of the artificial lake. He said the pace of allied works would be expedited by arranging sufficient funds.
Choudhary also directed the Urban Environmental Engineering Department to complete the construction works to drain 15 nullahs that flow into the river from old city.
Interestingly BJP ministers had not raised any query regarding artificial lake project in the District Development Board meeting which was held on July 3.
