Centre writing BJP's obituary in Jammu
7/27/2015 10:50:54 PM
When the Congress and the National Conference were defeated in the Assembly election seven months ago political observers had started writing obituaries. But more obituaries were written on the Congress in the region of Jammu. It was so because with 25 seats it had won out of 37 in the Jammu region the BJP was seen up and kicking making people to believe that the sun will never set on the party.Well the moment the election results were declared not many had anticipated that the BJP would share power with the PDP.But the unexpected had become a reality because the PDP leadership had no other alternative but to forge an alliance with the BJP because the Muftis were the last person to frame an alliance with the National Conference or seek its support for the process of Government making.
Yes,the PDP could have opted for the Congress for framing an alliance but with 12 MLAs the PDP could have not formed a stable Government. Hence the PDP leadership had to keep two things in mind. Forming a coalition Government with BJP could keep the National Conference out of power. Secondly,Mufti Mohd. Sayeed had visualised bright future for the economy of Jammu and Kashmir if he forged an alliance with the BJP that headed the NDA Government in the centre. Whatever may have been the compulsions on the part of the PDP and the BJP the two parties, that have different political ideologies, agreed to share power.
However, people had voted for change. They had voted for change of guard. But gradually people in Jammu and Kashmir have grown weary of the style of functioning of the PDP-BJP coalition Government. People have become disillusioned more with the BJP than with the PDP.And those who were not ready to write obituary for the BJP before the poll results were out or during the first 50 days of the Government are quick in sermonising on the plight of the BJP.Political observers rightly say that neither the Congress, nor the NC nor the PDP but the BJP itself has started writing the obituary for the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir. They blame the BJP led NDA Government in the centre for having written BJP's swan song in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the region of Jammu. Yes, the BJP ministers, including several MLAs,have failed to redress the grievances of the unemployed youth in the region of Jammu. They have failed to resolve the problem of regional discrimination. The BJP has not been able to fulfill its commitment on granting citizenship rights to the refugees from West Pakistan settled in Jammu for the last over 65 years.Even the level of governance has been quite low thereby giving an opportunity to the people to berate the BJP. What has amazed people is the way the BJP ministers and legislators are divided on various issues.
But what seems to have hastened the process of complete emaciation of the BJP in the Jammu region, which has been its traditional area of influence,is the inordinate delay on the part of the BJP led NDA Government to sanction one AIIMS for Jammu also. The NDA Government has already sanctioned one AIIMS for the Kashmir valley and the jammuites feel enraged because they believe that compared to the region of Jammu the valley of Kashmir has better health care facilities. A senior BJP leader, Dr Nirmal Singh, who is Deputy Chief Minister, had assured those agitating against delay in sanctioning AIIMS for Jammu, that the announcement on the establishment of the AIIMS was to be made before July 20.
The deadline, set by Singh,is over and the agitators are up in arms again. At one stage the BJP,which was on cloud nine because of its unprecedented success in the Assembly election, had planned to make inroads in the Kashmir valley. Again this exercise too has received a setback when the central Government ,delayed beyond one's patience, release of finncial package which could cover compensation to those hit by floods and landslides and for rebuilding the infrastructure damaged owing to floods. Jammuites have faced terrible hardships because of prolonged power outages and the centre delayed release of funds for building new power projects which could end the acute shortage of electricity. In fact the wheel of development is yet to move in Jammu and Kashmir and that may prove an Achilles heel for the BJP.
