Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 27: Authorities imposed restrictions in the Maisuma and adjacent areas here in order to avert the protests that could have been carried out against the mysterious death of a youth belonging to the Mandir Bagh area.
Since early morning huge deployment of police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel was made in the 'volatile' areas so as to contain the protests that could have rocked the areas following the mysterious death of a youth identified as Owais Ahmad Fafoo. The police and CRPF personnel stopped the movement of people both to and fro the Maisuma as well as nearby areas.
Barricades in form of concertina wires were erected in the sensitive areas and there was virtually no movement of people in these areas. In addition to this the mobile bunkers were also put in place so as to contain the situation. The residents of the areas were kept hostage in their respective homes and they were not allowed to come out. As such no protests could be carried out in the areas today.
It would be in place to mention here that protests broke out in the Maisuma and adjacent areas on Sunday after the body of Owais was fished out from the Jhelum River in Shadipora-Sumbal area in North Kashmir's Bandipora district. Relatives of Owais alleged that he was arrested by the police and later on got killed in the custody. The relatives as well as locals said that Owais was picked up along with another youth. The other youth was released few days back but only after the palms of the police personnel were greased, said the locals. They demanded a high level probe in the incident so that the responsibility is fixed and action is taken against the 'erring' cops. In the other adjacent areas where the restrictions were not enforced the people observed a shutdown against the death of the youth. Shops and commercial establishments remained closed in the Lal Chowk, Court Road, Koker Bazar, Hari Singh High Street, Budshah Chowk, Exchange Road and Forest Lane as a mark of protest against the 'killing' of Owais. However, both the public and private transport plied normally in the areas where there was strike against the mysterious death. Due to the extra deployment of police and CRPF personnel there was no protest in any of the areas. As such the situation remained normal in these days with the day passing off peacefully.
