KUPWARA, July 27: Panic has gripped the whole village of Teetwal in Tangdhar sector of this North Kashmir district where a mysterious disease has claimed five lives so far since July 10 this year.
Sources said that five people including two women from Tad village of Teetwal have died after falling ill due to the mysterious disease. The dead include Taja Begum Wife of Abdul Hamid Mughal, Ghulam Mustafa son of Mohammad Alam, Zohara Begum Wife of Mohammad Ismail, Abdul Hamid son of Firdous Ahmad and Qazi Khusal son of Abdul Rouf.
Locals of the area said that the deceased persons complained of chest and head pain and were admitted in the different hospitals, but all of them expired. However locals believe that deaths occurred due to outbreak of some water borne diseases, as they consumed contaminated water from local streams and Nullahs.
Besides five more persons have fallen ill and are currently admitted in hospitals which include Bilquees wife of Shabir Mughal, Khadija wife of Mumtaz Ahmad, Safoora Begum Wife of Mohammad Arif Mughal, Ruksa Begum Wife of Imtiyaz Ahmad Mughal and Mohammad Rafiq son of Mohammad Darya.
It is learnt from sources that Bilquees is critically ill and has been shifted to SKIMS Soura for advanced treatment, while as the other persons are currently admitted at Sub District Hospital (SDH) Tangdhar.
Meanwhile a senior medico at SDH Tangdhar wishing not to be named said that it seems the disease is not water borne. The medico said that they are ascertaining the real cause of deaths that has created panic among the general public.
When asked about the strength of doctors and Paramedical staff there in SDH Tangdhar, he said that there is a shortage of staff at Sub District Hospital Tangdhar.
However, he said that he along with paramedics is single handedly managing the things and appealed the government to depute the doctors as locals are caught in panic in the area.
