MLA Rashid accused of land grab | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, July 27: People of Langate constituency of north Kashmir's Kupwara held protests on Monday against alleged land grab by local MLA Sheikh Abdul Rashid alias Engineer Rashid. Rashid denies the charges, though. Dozens of people from the area gathered at Srinagar's Press Enclave, shouting anti-Rashid slogans. "Gunda raaj band karo," shouted the protesters, accusing Rashid of illegally grabbing land of a man in his constituency. They said that Rashid had grabbed the land of one Nazir Ahmad War, son of Abdul Ahad War, of Mawar, and threatens him if he asks Rashid to vacate the land or pay its price. The protesters said a case pertaining to this land grab is pending in court and is scheduled to be heard on July 29. "On the evening of July 26, Rashid sent some cops who thrashed men and women and hurled expletives at us," one of the protesters said. The protesters also alleged that Rashid was using his political powers as nobody in the administration listens to them. "We will knock every door where we feel our voice may be heard and justice delivered and will inform common masses about the real face of Rashid who often portrays himself as a saint," said another protestor. Protestors accused Rashid and his associates in the Langate constituency of having hijacked government departments. "Whosoever does not support Rashid and his associates has to face problems," they alleged. According to the people, they have constructed a school namely 'Frontline Model School' on the said land, which is managed by a local committee in which many orphan children also pursue education free of cost. When contacted, Rashid dismissed the allegations and said the protest was "merely aimed to defame me." "The few people who protested against me are paid agents of agencies who are known for their tyrant roles in the past in whole of north Kashmir," he said. "I have paid for the land in presence of hundreds of people of my constituency. It is the matter of 2005 when I was not an MLA. So where comes the allegation of using political power to grab land of common masses. Let law of land prevail," Rashid added. |
