Power woes continue as PDD officials shirk duties, run after politicians

Early Times Report

Kathua, July 28: Callousness and lackadaisical attitude of Power Development Department (PDD) authorities in Kathua has become the root cause of power woes. Ironically, the PDD officials, who are to ensure smooth power supply to the district, are often seen pleasing their political masters and running after them.
While the locals have been agitating over scheduled and unscheduled power curtailments time and again, PDD officials are not bothered.
Many transformers are out of order but department takes several days to replace the damaged ones. Locals alleged that the delay in replacement of damaged transformers was due to the fact that the PDD officials "keep functional and new transformers for VIP areas".
They alleged that one executive engineer was often seen moving with politicians for undue favours and choice postings. Linemen never visit their areas and if department provides electric poles for certain areas, JEs don't take initiative to erect them. The low voltage, huge fluctuation and unscheduled curtailments further add to the power woes of the people.
J&K Power Minister and Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh though has assured public during his first visit as a minister that he would reform the power system and regular power supply will be given to all but it seems that he has now overlooked the issue due to varied reasons.
"We are facing frequent power cuts every day. The PDD seems to have turned a deaf ear to our woes", said Sonu Sharma. He said not only the common people but also it is affecting the businessmen and farmers who are running their farming business after getting loans from Kissan Credit Cards (KCCs) and banks. The incessant rains damaged their crops but continuous power-cut further have aggravated their sufferings. Nevertheless, if the power supply system remains like this, the farmers would have to face number of hardships.
Raj Kumar said after fixation of the electronic meters neither they are getting regular power supply nor the relief from low voltage despite being assured the streamlining of power system.
