'To appease Kashmir, BJP playing with Jammu sentiment'
AIIMS row fallout of fake secularism

Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 29: The situation in Jammu region is highly volatile. Anything can happen anywhere in the region, which has been witnessing a remarkable unity among all. There is hardly any social group or business leader or any student organization or any political party operating in Jammu region which has not identified itself with the ongoing mass struggle over the issue of AIIMS - an issue which has been taken up by the JKHCBA-Jammu-led AIIMS Coordination Committee (ACC) in right earnest and in a big way. Even the ruling PDP and the NC, which are known for their essentially Valley-centric approach, have come forward and publicly stated that Jammu region deserves a full-fledged AIIMS. The PDP has said that it endorsed the demand in Jammu for AIIMS and the NC has said AIIMS is must for Jammu. As for the Panthers Party and the Congress, they have held several protest demonstrations and burnt effigies of BJP ministers and MLAs. As far as the Bar Association is concerned, its members all across the region have been striking work for almost a week now.
That the political situation in Jammu region has been far from normal could be seen from the fact the people have already observed two massive bandhs on April 24 and May 27, organized two very impressive candlelight protest marches on June 5 and July 29, organized one Lalkar Rally on July 23 and also organized one bikers' rally on July 27. The concerned people participated in all these activities on their own. Besides, the ACC had organized chain hunger strike for six days till June 18, the day it suspended the chain hunger strike and called off the 72-hour-long bandh call after two BJP ministers gave a written commitment to the ACC that an appropriate decision on the issue will be taken by the Government of India latest by July 20, which didn't happen.
As a result, the ACC resumed its suspended chain hunger strike programme on July 21 and since then people from all walks of life have sitting on hunger strike. The number of persons sitting on hunger strike is increasing day by day and it has become difficult for the ACC to accommodate all. Such is nature of the people's response to the ongoing movement in Jammu region for AIIMS. Not only this, the ACC has given a bandh call for 72 hours (July 31-August 2). The call has evoked tremendous response. All those who matter in the region have supported the bandh call. If the situation as it prevails today in the Jammu region is any indication, then it can be said with full confidence that the declared bandh would be a massive affair. It could even turn into an indefinite bandh. Such is the anti-BJP wave in Jammu region.
That the BJP has fallen from grace, lost whole of its sheen, appeal and credibility is evident from the invectives and epithets which are being used against it by one and all in the region. Suffice to say that it is being denounced as promise-breaker, cheat, dishonest, undependable, untrustworthy and so on with many saying that "it would be a crime against humanity if someone goes near the BJP". Significantly, the people of Jammu region have also lost their confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said he is no different from his predecessors like Manmohan Singh. They are angry with him because he didn't announce an AIIMS for Jammu on July 17, when he was here in the City of Temples.
However, the most serious charge that is being leveled against the BJP is that it, instead of appreciating the urges of its own constituency, is killing it by indulging in politics of fake secularism to appease Kashmir, Kashmiri leadership and other anti-Jammu elements in the Valley. To make their point, they are referring to the agenda of alliance. They have been terming it as "an agenda of subversion", "a charter of new bondage" as far as the people of Jammu region and Ladakh are concerned, a declaration against refugees from West Pakistan and displaced persons from PoJK and Kashmir Valley. "The BJP is killing patriotic people of Jammu region to prove its secular credentials" has been the upshot of their whole argument against the BJP.
How sad! A party which won massive mandates from Jammu in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in 2014 is today being looked down upon and despised by the same people who brought it to power. The BJP leadership must sit up without losing a moment to find where it went wrong. It can win back the trust of the alienated Jammu by taking three steps - announcement of AIIMS for Jammu, review of the agenda of alliance and review of the situation arising out in the aftermath of its becoming part of the establishment in Jammu & Kashmir. There is no other option available to it.
