Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, July 31: The repeated pleas by chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to the youth not to carry out protests after congregational Friday prayers once again fell on deaf ears since protests were carried out in the Nowhatta area in downtown Srinagar.
Eye witnesses told Early Times that as soon as the Friday prayers were over groups of youth appeared in the Nowhatta area and started carrying out protests. The protesters were raising slogans in favour of ISIS, Pakistan and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and they started pelting stones on police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel present there.
The protesters waved the flags of ISIS, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Pakistan during the protests and this caught the attention of the people present there. The youth appeared outside Jamia Masjid in the old city and started waving the flags of ISIS, LeT and Pakistan. The youth appeared in the chowk and resorted to high pitch sloganeering.
The groups of youth along with the other people offered funeral in absentia (Gaibana Nimaz-I-Jinaza) for the Mumbai blast lone convict Yaqub Memon who was hanged on Thursday. The people who took part in the funeral also raised slogans in favour of Memon and expressed solidarity with him.
Once the funeral was over, the youth pelted stones on police and CRPF personnel. The police and security forces personnel exercised restraint and didn't use force against the youth. The ding dong battle between the two sides continued for brief period of time as compared to the other days when stone pelting takes place.
Dukhataran-e-Millat led by its chairperson Syeda Aasiya Andrabi carried out a procession in favour of Memon. The procession started from the Nowhatta and culminated at the Gojwara chowk. This group of people also raised slogans in favour of Memon and expressed solidarity with him as well. They also condemned the hanging of Memon.
At the same time some leaders of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference today staged a protest rally demanding the immediate release of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in Kashmir and outside jails, against the ill conditions of Kashmiri prisoners and against the hanging of Memon. While appealing the international human rights organization to intervene and lobby for the release of Kashmiri prisoners lodged in jails, senior Hurriyat leaders including Musadiq Adil, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, Javaid Ahmad Mir and Engineer Hilal Ahmad War and scores of others staged a protest demonstration at Press Colony during which they demanded the immediate release of Kashmiri prisoners and condemned the alleged ill treatment meted out to these prisoners.
The Hurriyat leaders also demanded the return of the mortal remains of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru who were hanged and buried by the authorities in Tihar Jail. During the protest, police used force to disperse the protesters. Shahid, Mir, War and other activists were arrested and lodged in police station Kothi Bagh. Mir also sustained some injuries during the incident.
