Jammu, Aug 3: Statements of the leaders of the National Conference while shedding tears on the Police lathicharge on the 'peaceful' protesters are highly musing as people are astonished by the ease with which these leaders have forgotten the days when police was turned into an oppressor and even women could not escape the wrath of cane wielding men in khaki.
The agitation over Central University Jammu is still fresh in the minds of Jammuites and so are the pictures of police crackdown on the protestors including students and women. It is strange that with just four months in opposition, hearts of NC leaders have started beating for the 'peaceful' protesters. "Several times during NC- Congress regime, even women protesters were subjected to brutal cane charge and now when they are condemning lathicharge on the 'peaceful' protestors, they are infact exposing their hypocrisy only" said Sunil Dutt, a leader of a student organization which was at the forefront of the agitations for CUJ.
The free hand given to police by the NC led coalition government was however not confined to the protest for CUJ; the women protesters had to face wrath of police during protests of the Home Guards, who have been deprived of their legitimate dues for years, Government Employees, who have been ruing a government backstab, and ASHA workers and Anganwari workers who were demanding regularization and salaries under rules as well. "I have been targeted several times by cane wielding police during NC regime several times even when we were protesting peacefully" said a woman leader of the Home Guards. "Even men in khaki have manhandled women protesters and these leaders who are shedding crocodile tears today had turned dumb then" she added.
