Mir demands AIIMS for Kashmir, Sham for Jammu
Divided Congress
8/4/2015 12:22:38 AM
ET Report
JAMMU, Aug 3: Very interesting developments are taking place in Jammu & Kashmir, with parties like the Congress taking one stand in Kashmir on the issue of AIIMS and another stand in Jammu on the same issue. The point is that the burning issue of AIIMS has vertically divided the Congress party in the state and it became manifestly clear on Sunday.
On Sunday, JKPCC chief Ghulam Ahmad Mir said Kashmir is the only deserving part of the state for establishment of AIIMS. "Kashmir is the most deserving part of the state for the establishment of AIIMS as this part of the state has lesser outer links and remains almost closed throughout the winter," he said at Hajin (Bandipora, Kashmir) while talking to media persons after concluding party convention there.
The same day, vice-president of the state unit of the Congress, Sham Lal Sharma, along with other senior party leaders, held a protest demonstration against the BJP and got arrested demanding full-fledged AIIMS for Jammu. In fact, senior Congress leaders held protest demonstrations in different parts of Jammu province, condemned BJP for its act of betrayal, burnt effigies of Deouty Chief Minister Nirmal Singh and other BJP leaders, demanded a full-fledged AIIMS for Jammu and threatened that they would gherao the BJP ministers in case the BJP failed to fulfill its written commitment given to the AIIMS Coordination Committee.
That the Congress got vertically divided on the issue of AIIMS speaks for itself and suggests that the politics in Jammu province and politics in Kashmir is not the same, as it has to cater to the sentiments of the people of the two regions - a task that cannot be accomplished unless the state is divided into three parts. Mir himself admitted that Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are pulling in different directions.
