| Stop converting India into land of reservations | | | If parts of Gujarat have been rocked by violence as a result of clashes between Patels,a major community in the state demanding reservation for the ethnic group in educational institutions and in Government jobs and police the problem is not confined only to Gujarat. Each community, ethnic groups and minorities have been demanding reservation in professional colleges and in Government jobs.If the central and the state Governments concede the demand of each ethnic group for reservation in jobs and educational institutions a very meagre sets would be left for those who have merit and do not come under any reservation umbrella. A couple of years ago Jats too have demanded reservation in educationl institutions and in Government jobs and the country had to lose tones of money when the protesters, belonging to the Jat community, demonstrated on the rail tracks thereby blocking free movement of passenger and goods trains. A number of areas, right from Rajasthan to Har yna, witnessed scenes of violence. And the latest in the series of protests in favour of reservations were witnessed in Gujrat where Patels organized a rally which was attended by several lakh people thereby lending credence to their claim that being in majority in the state they needed reservation in jobs and educational institutions.
The capital city of Gujarat, Ahmedabad, and other areas witnessed violence during late hours of Tuesday following the arrest of Hardik Patel, who is spearheading a campaign demanding OBC status for the Patel community. In north Gujarat mobs set fire to the offices of a minister and two MLAs.Hardik Patel was released later but not before parts of Ahmedabad were rocked by incidents of violence in which eight people were killed and over 100 injured. A few areas in Ahmedabad, Surat, Mehsana, Visnagar, and Unjha were placed under curfew on Wednesday, while in other places paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure law and order situation in the state as Gujarat remained closed for the day.Internet services were again suspended in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, incidents of group clashes, clashes between Patels and police were reported. Two Bank ATMs have been set on fire.
After Chief Minister Anandiben Patel briefed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, the Centre has agreed to provide additional companies of paramilitary forces to take the control of the situation after massive violence across the State.According to police sources, more than 50 buses were torched, while many government properties were targeted by the angry mobs, who were upset with the police crack down on agitators. If tomorrow or day after the Government concedes the demand of Patels for reservation in jobs and educational institutions other communities too would be motivated to launch agitation. Then there will be no end to it when Buddhists, Sikhs, Christians, Muslims and other communities have been seeking reservation in Government jobs and in educational institutions. In that case India will become a land of reservations. If Patels and other ethnic groups secure reservation the day will not be far off when these very ethnic groups may demand reservation while travelling by train or by air. A day may come when these ethnic groups may demand reservation in watching Bollywood movies in theatres. Then a day will come when they will demand concession in the supply of ration , petrol, cooking gas kerosene oil, A day will come when these ethnic groups may demand concession in purchase of toothpaste, garments and grocery items. Yes, under the provisions of the const itution reservation for scheduled castes and Tribes were allowed but there should have been some limit to it. By the time majority of people belonging to the SC,ST and OBC had entered the creamy level reservations should have ended. It was not done.Let now there be end to reservation Raj which would ensure justice to those who are in the category of merit. India is multi-religious and multi-lingual country but if it starts providing reservation to each ethnic groups there would be no end to the demand from other ethnic groups because there are scores of major and minor ethnic groups in the country Already Gujjars and Jats have threatened to launch agitation in case they were not given reservation in jobs and educational institutions.. |
