jammu, Aug 28 :The Traffic Police and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) have been contemplating to install nearly 30 more traffic signals in the city, but the existing signals in man busy localities are defunct. Source told Early Times that most of the signals are 'dead' for many months, causing chaos on the roads. But instead of restoring the traffic signals, the JMC wants to install more. The locations where the signals are not working include Satwari Chowk, Narwal by pass, near Wave Mall, Women College Gandhi Nagar and Jewel Chowk. Every day unending traffic jams are witnessed in these areas due to the defunct signals, many eyewitnesses told Early Times. In 2012-13, the Traffic Department had decided to install signals at 60 junctions across the city under the supervision of JMC. In the first phase, signals were set up at 30 places, and most of them are defunct, while the remaining 30 signals are yet to be installed in the outskirts of City. People are questioning the rationale for installing more signals when the authorities cannot handle the old ones which are 'dead'. "It makes no sense to install more signals when the officials are unable to repair the defunct signals," a senior resident told Early Times. A daily commuter, Pardeep Kumar said the installed signals, rather than helping in streamlining the traffic, have created chaos on the roads. He said that if the authorities wanted to streamline the traffic of Jammu city and wanted to give respite to people from traffic snarls, they should restore the 'dead' existing signals before installing more lights. When contacted Superintendent of Traffic Police, Mohan Lal admitted that most of the traffic signals were out of order. He said it was the responsibility of JMC to restore them. "I am not authorized to comment on, but I don't understand why JMC is showing laziness to repair the defunct signals", he said. JMC's Commissioner Mandeep Kour said that it was the responsibility of Traffic Department to bring the issue of 'dead' signals into the notice of JMC.
