Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Aug 28: Days after the release of his video, pictures of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant Burhan Wani were displayed by a group of youth outside the historic Jamia Masjid here immediately after the Friday prayers. Later on protests also broke out in some of the areas of downtown Srinagar.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that as soon as the congregational Friday prayers concluded a picture of Burhan could be seen held by a group of youth. This group of youth was also carrying the banners of Islamic State (IS) with one of the banners reading 'We are JKIS'. Yet another banner read 'ISJK is coming'. Flags of Lashkar-e-Toiba and Hizbul Mujahideen could also be seen being displayed by the group of youth.
This group of youth covering their faces with masks was also carrying photos of Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah. A combined banner being displayed by one of the youth was containing photos of Jinnah, former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Hamid Gul and Burhan. The other youth could be seen displaying flags of IS and poster size picture of Burhan.
The youth could be seen waving the different banners as well as pictures to the press photographers who had gathered there to cover any protest that might broke out. On the poster size photo of Burhan it was written that if people want 'freedom' than gun is the only solution.
While the group of masked youth was busy in displaying the banners and photos, protests started near the Jamia Masjid and the same spread to the other nearby areas. The protesters started pelting stones on the police personnel with the same being retaliated by lobbing of smoke shells. One of the smoke shells landed near a group of press photographers. However, none among them sustained injuries.
In no time the clashes between the protesters and police as well as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel spread to the areas like Nowhatta, Kawdara and Rajouri Kadal. Police and CRPF personnel resorted to teargas shelling in order to disperse the protesters. The ding dong battle between the two sides carried on for some hours.
It would be in place to mention here that Burhan Wani, a resident of Tral in South Kashmir posted a video some days back in which he asked the youth to be ready to wage Jihad (holy war) in order to make Kashmir a 'free' place. Burhan who is said to be one of the top commanders of HM had also warned police and STF personnel of dire consequences in case they did not take part in operations against militants in Kashmir valley.
The Hizb commander in the video had said that many young men and women are acting as 'informers' for police and security forces agencies. He in the video said that he is giving a last chance to such people so that they mend their ways. He made it clear that he would kill such people if they did not retreat and continued to do the 'job' for the security forces or police.
