Bukhari's statement leaves Drabu red-faced

Early Times Report

Srinagar, Aug 30: A day after, Minister for PWD, Syed Muhammad Altaf Bukhari candidly admitted that government couldn't do much for the flood-victims, differences apparently furthered between him and Finance Minister Dr Haseeb Drabu, who all these months promised mega rehabilitation for the victims.
Sources said Bukhari's statement that government failed to ensure proper rehabilitation of the victims, has left Drabu red-faced. While on one hand Drabu had been buying time from the flood victims, particularly representatives of business community, Bukhari hinted that it was futile to keep waiting. "The Central government did not help much and neither could the state government do much for the flood victims," the PWD Minister said while addressing a function at Kashmir University.
Though over the months rumor mills were rife that the two were not sharing good chemistry, it is for the first time that the minister duo from PDP has publicly contested each other's claims. Now both are working on "parallel strategies to prove each other wrong."
Sources said Bukhari made "candid confession" following his detailed deliberations with another party colleague and minister who is understood to be poles apart from Drabu on policy matters.
"With barely a week left for the first anniversary of the devastative floods, which hit Srinagar onSeptember 6, the duo has decided not to keep the people in dark any further and they would make their policy clear before the people," the sources said.
They said Bukhari who represents Amira Kadal constituency, which remained worst hit by floods, was finding it uncomfortable too see innocent people wait for rehabilitation package.
Sources said Drabu's role in failing to impress the central government over much-needed rehabilitation in the state has put the government in tight stop. "Since August 15, when the scheduled announcement of rehabilitation package from the centre didn't mature, leaders like Bukhari were trying for opportunity to make things clear before the people," the sources said.
Sources said given Bukhari's shocker, Drabu has changed his strategy. "Drabu Sahib will no more speak of rehabilitation package but has decided to phrase a new term 'development package'. This way he'll be able to buy more time from people," the sources said.
Sources said the party high command may soon call a meeting to see who of the two groups was at fault. "Either of the two groups will face party fury," the sources said.
