Waving of Pak & IS flags in valley to attract added attention
8/31/2015 10:51:28 PM
Enough is enough. This is the latest instruction to the security forces, especially the police, who are to deal firmly with mischief mongers, with those vitiating the atmosphere in Kashmir by waving not only Pakistani flags but the flags of ISIS. During the last couple of months it has become a fashion among the youth in Kashmir to wave Pakistani and ISIS flags in order to convey to the world that the Kashmir issue needs immediate settlement failing which they will not allow peace to return to not only the valley but in the entire south Asian region. While waving of Pakistani flags is an act of display of pro-Pakistan sentiments among a section of people known to be loyalists of hardliners among the separatists, the waving of ISIS flags is simply a reflection of an urge of the enraged youth to have IS units set up in the Kashmir valley. And not only the State Government but the Union Home Ministry has told the security agencies, especially the police,to display no leniency towards those elements which were trying to derail peace in Kashmir by raising pro-Pakistan slogans and by waving ISIS and Pakistani flags.
The PDP led coalition Government had tolerated all this nonsense for more than a couple of months but now finding the situation getting out of control the security agencies, including the police, have been told to order a crackdown on those who have been involved in waving of ISIS and Pakistani flags in various parts of Kashmir. What seems to have added new dimensions to the over four-decade old practice of holding demonstrations against steps aimed at restoring peace by detaining the rowdy elements involved in acts meant to derail peace and to kick up political storm. According on the orders from the state Government and under suggestions from the Union Home Ministry police carried out raids in parts of interior Srinagar for detaining those who had been involved in waving Pakistani and IS flags. These flags were waved and unfurled usually during public rallies organized by the separatists or by some religious groups with the purpose of attracting added attention from the print and electronic media. Those who have been waving Pakistani and ISIS flags want to demonstrate to the world that people in Kashmir want to be part of Pakistan. This is a wrong inference the protesters were drawing. In fact as far as the Muslim dominated valley is concerned people are torn among three ideologies. One wants an independent Kashmir, the other wants status quo in the State's accession with India, and the third,a smaller section of people, support Kashmir to be become part of Pakistan. This way waving of Pakistani and IS flags was simply to attract attention from international agencies and bodies.
And when the police ordered a crackdown on those involved in waving of Pakist ani and ISIS flags in down-town areas of Srinagar city it was greeted with bigger demonstrations in which the demonstrators clashed with the police. The CRPF had to open fire when one of their camps was stoned. In the police firing a 20-year old boy was injured. This led to bigger clashes because the youth did not want the police arrest mischief mongers lest they divulged, during interrogation, details about the moral and material support to protest demonstrations and waving of IS and Pakistani flags from separatists and from agencies across the border. Campaign against arrest of those involved in waving of Pakistani and ISIS flags indicates that those involved in this anti national activity are not prepared to suffer imprisonment. Whatever they have been doing is simply part of their act of securing better means of livelihood. Had the majority of youth in Kashmir been serious about their display of anti-India sentiments they would not have opposed police crackdown on mischief mongers. And those who have been in the business of waving Pakistani and ISIS flags have taken undue advantage of laxity given to them by the coalition Government.Since the Mufti led Government has favoured freedom of movement and speech these miscreants have taken u ndue advantage of this freedom. Finding that thins were assuming serious dimensions the state and the central Governments had no other alternative but to take firm steps against anti-social and anti-national elements. It is hoped that the campaign against the rowdy elements was continued till peace returned to the State.
