Farooq demands autonomy, Sagar says J&K an unsettled issue
What about Jammu?

Early Times Report
jammu, Aug 31: The National Conference, Which suffered a massive defeat in the Assembly elections last year even in the Valley, its core constituency, is unlikely to change its stand on Jammu & Kashmir, which is integral part of India. It had fought the election on the autonomy plank, but could win only 18 seats, including 14 from Kashmir, 4 from Jammu and nil from Ladakh - its lowest ever tally in any election. In 1996, it had won 57 seats and in 2002 and 2008, 28 seats each. In other words, the majority of population in Jammu & Kashmir rejected the NC's autonomy demand. That the NC could win only 4 seats outside Kashmir was a vindication of the nationalist politics that had been dominating the politics of these two regions, as also a loud message to the NC that its autonomy slogan had no place in these two regions.
The message from Jammu and Ladakh for the NC was loud and clear: No to autonomy on the grounds that autonomy meant for the State a step short of complete independence from India; that it meant withdrawal of all the Central laws and institutions from the State; that it meant destruction of people of Jammu region and Ladakh; that it meant the rise of a situation in which the non-Muslim minorities would only suffer like they suffered, and continue to suffer, in Pakistan and Bangladesh; that it meant the perpetuation of Kashmiri domination over Jammu region and Ladakh and their further exploitation; and that it also meant the negation of the very idea of India. To be more precise, the message from Jammu and Ladakh was that they were committed to India and no power on earth could drive them away from New Delhi.
That the message has no impact on the rabble-rousing NC and that it continues to rake up the divisive and sectarian autonomy demand could be seen from what NC president Farooq Abdullah said on Sunday in Jammu significantly in the presence of BJP MLA and speaker of the Assembly Kavinder Gupta and NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar said in Srinagar the same day.
Farooq Abdullah acknowledged that the aspirations of the people of Jammu province and Ladakh are different from those of Kashmir, but, at the same time, batted for autonomy, saying grant of autonomy to the State is a must to end unrest in the state and harmonize inter-regional relations. "Jammu has its own aspirations. Similarly, other regions in Jammu province, too, have their own aspirations and we have to think about all of them. If we fail to understand the grievances of a particular region or a community, we will not be able to take this State on the path of development. Regional autonomy is the only way forward to take J&K on the path of development and prosperity," Farooq Abdullah while addressing a function organized by the otherwise defunct Institute of J&K Affairs in collaboration with JK Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, Jammu, to pay homage to late Balraj Puri on his first death anniversary.
In Kashmir, Sagar endorsed NC working president and former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's nasty stand that Jammu & Kashmir is an unsettled issue and said that the NC was prepared to even go beyond autonomy if that could help resolve the Kashmir issue. "The National Conference has always strived to restore the internal autonomy as had existed before 1953 in the state. However, on the larger perspective, Kashmir issue should be solved as per the aspirations of its people and our party is willing to accept the verdict of people," Sagar told a Srinagar-based daily on the sidelines of a party function at Khanyar, which he represents in the Assembly. "Omar Abdullah has made it clear in his tenure in Government that Kashmir has not merged with India but has only signed instrument of accession and that the final status of Kashmir has not been settled. If you see the speeches of Omar Abdullah, we have made it clear that Kashmir issue is yet to be resolved. And it's imperative for India and Pakistan to take all its stakeholders on board to resolve Kashmir amicably," Sagar also said.
It should be clear from what the out-on-the-limb NC leaders said that the NC, like all other Kashmiri parties as well as all separatist outfits and Pakistan, doesn't consider Jammu & Kashmir a settled issue and that it, like them, considers both Jammu province and Ladakh region irrelevant. This is not acceptable. The people of Jammu and Ladakh are Indians and they are also the masters of their own destiny in the country they call Bharat. They have not given power of attorney to any Kashmiri leader to speak for these two regions and the people they house. It is disgusting the Speaker of the Assembly, instead of defending the constitution, allowed Farooq Abdullah to pour contempt on the Indian Constitution and batted for a dispensation outside the political and constitutional organization of India.
It is pertinent to mention here that Jammu witnessed on Sunday a great nationalist event: The resolve of the Jammu's civil society to fight out all the divisive forces and work religiously for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India. The case in point is the interactive session on the PDP-BJP agenda of alliance that was organized by Panun Kashmir and participated in by several leading civil society members, all taking a solemn pledge that they would defeat all the divisive forces at whatever cost and declaring that they would fan out across the region to educate the public opinion about the dangerous implications of the agenda of alliance and expose all those in Kashmir, and even New Delhi, who want to compromise the Indian stand on Jammu & Kashmir to accommodate Pakistani and Kashmiri separatists' anti-India and sectarian viewpoint.
