JAMMU, Sept 1: In order to check toll tax evasion and curb the menace of illicit distillation of liquor and illegal smuggling of a liquor, the department of Excise intensified raids and imposed Rs. 66,672 fine on the defaulters in the month of August.
Also more than 200 raids were carried out and sixteen persons have been arrested and cases lodged in various courts of law against the accused persons for illicit distillation of liquor and other ancillary offences.
The sleuths of Excise department have also seized and destroyed about two tons of Lahan. The J&K Excise Department has also launched a massive exercise to arrest the menace of over-charging by the retail licensees from customers and strict instructions have been issued in this regard. Surprise checks are being conducted to arrest the problem. During the month of August, an amount of Rs. 1,95,000 has been imposed as fine on licensees mainly on the account of overcharging.
The J&K Excise Department has re-energized and activated the Eradication and Enforcement Wing Jammu to act as flying squad to take action, as provided under law, on any complaint regarding violation of Excise Law. The Department has made public, the mobile numbers of all the Excise and Taxation Officers of various ranges for information of general public, so that in case any person finds or notices any violation of the provisions of J&K Excise Act, 1958 i.e. illicit distillation, smuggling of liquor, overcharging by wine-shops, consumption or possession of liquor not for sale in J&K by any person etc, may immediately inform the nearest Excise and taxation Officer for initiation of action under Law. It is also informed that any complaints and violations can be registered with the following offices at the given contact numbers.
