Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 1: Despite claims of Health and Medical Education Minister, Ch Lal Singh of bringing the functioning of hospitals to normal, nothing has improved in government hospitals and the commoner is the worst sufferer. There is no proper patient care in the hospitals as the senior doctors instead of examining patients in hospitals refer them to their private clinics for consultation. According to sources a senior gynecologist in one of the city's government hospital who examined a patient during pregnancy at her clinic for seven months asked her that she will operate her at her private clinic and not in hospital.
The poor lady pleaded that she can't bear the exhorbitant rates of a private nursing home as she belongs to lower income group but this has been totally turned down by the doctor saying that there is heavy rush in the governemnt hospital and it will not be possible for her to operate the patient there.
When the poor lady asked how much charges she had to bear for operation and post operative care in hospital including charge of medicines the doctor said the total cost will be approximately up to Rs 50,000. This has become a common problem and the doctors deliberately avoid examining patients in the hospitals, sources added.
Sources said that despite the growing demand for ban on private practice of senior doctors the Government was sleeping over the issue with the result some senior doctors doing good private practice are maintaining total monopoly in hospitals.
The problem is not confined to this place but for radio diagnostic tests in the government hospitals which have latest machinery of CT Scan, Ultrasound, X Rays etc the patients are asked that the date is not available as the machine is not functioning properly and sometimes they are asked to come after a week, ten days or even month, sources said.
Sources said that some doctors have even taken up the issue with Principal medical College saying that they have received complaints that the ultrasound tests are not being conducted by the staff in GMC or SMHS and patients needing such tests for emergency operations are being deliberately avoided.
This has forced the Principal GMC to issue a notification which has also been pasted on the walls of radio diagnostic departments asking the doctors and other staff of radiology to do away with this practice and do the ultrasound and other tests of the patients on the same date on which they are referred by doctors, sources added.
Such notice can be seen in front of radio diagnostic departments in SMGS as well as GMC, sources said, adding despite that the doctors and lower staff in hospitals working in Radio diagnostic departments are trying to avert the patients coming for emergency tests.
There is a brewing resentment among common masses against this highhandedness of staff as the patient who is going to be operated within one or two days is asked by the doctors and other staff in radio diagnostic department that they can't conduct the test today as there is heavy rush and he has to wait for a week when the patient is given the date of operation by the doctors much more ahead of that.
Will Minister look into this issue and will he take a bold initiative to ban the private practice of doctors is a million dollar question?
