SRINAGAR, Sept 1: After failing to meet expectations of the people of Jammu region who had voted them to power, the BJP has stooped so low to boast about its contribution that its ministers now inaugurate facilities which even a lineman wouldn't ordinarily do to mark celebrations.
In the latest, the Minister for Forest, Environment & Ecology and Social Welfare, Bali Bhagat has inaugurated a colony transformer in Mohalla Verma Barnai and related the development with "focused attention" on "equitable development" in all the regions of Jammu and Kashmir.
Interestingly, the news about transfer inauguration was circulated by the Information Department on August 31 evening along with photo of the Minister alongside the transformer he dedicated to the people.
"Reiterating that equitable development of all the regions is being given focused attention, the Minister for Forest, Environment & Ecology and Social Welfare, Bali Bhagat said area specific development projects have been devised to meet the needs of the people. The Minister was speaking at a meeting with local representatives at Barnai today. The Minister also dedicated 100 KVA transformer to the people of Mohalla Verma, Barnai installed under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF)," the official handout said.
This is one of the smallest transformers to any area is given in the State. Officials said mostly 400 KVA transformers are installed in residential colonies in a routine manner without any pomp and show even by the linemen.
Officials said it was for the first time in the history of J&K that a cabinet minister has "inaugurated" a transformer. A senior Power Development Department officer said normally even receiving stations, which feed a big area, is not inaugurated by Ministers. "Not even MoS inaugurates such facilities," he said.
The official said colony transformer is installed and simply switched on by the lineman and that no special function is held in this connection. "For that matter it's not necessary even for a Junior Engineer to be present there for start of such facility. This is a routine work which needs no special media attention ever," the official said, adding "making news of transformer installation was disgraceful."
Sources said Bhagat did it on the advice of Deputy Chief Minister Dr Nirmal Singh, who wants his party ministers to hype "every routine affair before the people of Jammu." Singh also holds the Power Ministry.
"Basically BJP has failed to even improve basic facilities like Bijli, Sadak and Paani in the region, so now they want to sell every work as mega development," said Parveen Kumar, a resident of Jammu, adding that the power supply continues to be erratic while roads are full of potholes even in the heart of Jammu.
Repeated attempts to contact the Forest Minister proved futile.
