Jammu, Sept 2: Authorities of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) have been arbitrarily increasing fee for last three consecutive years, making it difficult for poor students to join the varsity. A faculty member said that in August 2004, the then President of India Dr APJ Abdul Kalam had appreciated the SMVD Shrine Board for launching the varsity and had expressed hope that it would provide opportunities of technical higher education to students from poor sections. "But from the very beginning, the varsity authorities seemed determined to generate more and more revenue despite abundant funds available with the SMVD Shrine Board. The aim of varsity authorities is to make it a profit earning university like other private universities," the teacher said. A student of SMVDU told Early Times that in session 2013-14, the fee structure of B Tech & B Architecture was Rs 66,200, which included tuition fee, examination fee, registration fee, medical, internet & computer, library, NSS, sports, student welfare, etc. But in 2014-15, the fee for the two courses was hiked to Rs 1,38, 000, which includes tuition fee, annual fee, security deposit and hostel charges. The huge hike is not limited to B.Tech and B. Architecture. There has been hike in fee for other courses like M.Tech, M.Sc Mathematics, M.Sc Biotechnology, M.Sc Physics, MBA, PhD, MCA, etc. No senior official of the SMVDU was available for comment. |
