| HM militant, soldier killed in Rafiabad encounter | | |  S Tahir-Ul Haq

BARAMULLA, Sept 2: A militant of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit and a solider were killed today in an encounter in Ladoora village of Rafiabad area in this district of north Kashmir.
A senior police official told Early Times that the encounter began in Rafiabad area after security forces along with 32 Rashtriya Rifles, on specific information about the presence of militants, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation at 7 am in Ladoora village.
The police official said as the security forces were conducting search, militants fired upon them triggering an encounter. "An army soldier was killed during the operation," the official said. During the search operation militant present in a house fired upon the joint search party. The fire was retaliated. In the ensuing encounter one militant identified as Riyaz Ahmad resident of Brath Kalan, Sopore was killed, said official.
The militant was killed after the residential house he was holed in was blasted with an Improvise Explosive Device (IED), said official. The official said that two army soldiers were injured in an encounter, among which one of the jawan of 32 RR succumbed to his injuries.
The slain militant was affiliated with Lashkar-e-Islam -a breakaway group of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM), said official adding that the said militant was involved in a number of killings in Sopore and its adjoining areas.
The militant was also involved in threatening and 'terrorizing' the land lords of mobile towers and mobile franchise owners.
"This year the slain militant was involved in the killing of a BSNL franchise in June. A number of FIR's stand registered against the militant in different Police Stations," official added.
He said that both the militants carry a bounty of Rs 10 lakh each on their heads. They are accused of killing six persons, including separatist activists and former militants in Sopore town.
Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of Police North Kashmir range Garib Dass told Early Times that the slain militant, Riyaz Ahmed Mir alias Gasha S/O Mohammad Ashraf Mir resident of Brath Kalan Sopore joined HM outfit last year. He was operating along with Imtiyaz Kandroo alias Fayaz and Adil Mir of HM.
The militant was involved in number of civilian killings including land lords of mobile towers, and both Najar and Riyaz are believed to have defied the command of Hizbul Mujahideen Supremo Syed Salahuddin and have been operating under the shadow name of LeI outfit, said Dass.
The DIG said that one AK 47 rifle, 02 AK Magazines and AK rounds were recovered from the encounter site in Rafiabad area.
It is pertinent to mention here that on August 28, a Pakistani militant of LeT outfit Sijad Ahmad of Pakistan was caught alive in the same area Rafiabad. |
