Four militants killed in Vilgam-Handwara encounter

KUPWARA, Sep 3: Security forces killed four militants in a fierce night long encounter in Vilgam forest of Handwara tehsil in this frontier district. One Army jawan also got killed in the operation while two others sustained bullet injuries.
A top police official told Early Times that a joint party of army's Para Regiment, police's Special Operations Group and CRPF acted on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.
"On Wednesday late evening, Army's 6 Rashtriya Rifle's (RR) patrolling party came in contact with a group of 3-4 heavily armed militants who fired upon the security forces in a forest area in Sochalwari hamlet of Villgam village in Handwara area," said the police official.
The official said that 9 Para, 6 RR and 98 BN of CRPF and Special Operation Group (SOG) cordoned off the whole area and took search operation in the forest area of Sochelwari, jurisdiction of Police Station Villigam, Handwara. He said militants opened a heavy volume of fire on the security forces, the fire was retaliated and ensuing a gunfight which ended this morning.
Early Times has learnt from sources that during encounter four unidentified militants were killed. An Army Jawan of 9 Para, Mohan Nath Goswami was also killed and 2 other jawans were injured in the encounter are undergoing treatment in Army Hospital.
The identity of militants and affiliation of organization is being ascertained, the search operation is still on in the area till the last reports came in, said sources.
However a senior official said that four AK 47 rifles, 14 AK Magazines, 95 AK rounds, four pouches and one UBGL grenade and other warlike stores including ammunition, grenades and radio sets have also been recovered from the encounter site.
Pertinently Handwara encounter broke out shortly after gunfight in Rafiabad's Ladoora village which ended with killing of army man and a militant.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, North Kashmir range, Garib Dass told Early Times that four Pakistani militants were killed in a night long encounter in Vilagam village of Handwara this morning.
"According to our intelligence sources these four LeT militants of Pakistan were active in the Handwara area from past one month," said Dass adding their identity was not immediately ascertained but they belong to LeT militant outfit.
