| Bhaderwah Degree College loses sheen due to teacher shortage | | |  Early Times Report
BHADERWAH, Sept 4: The shortage of teaching staff in Government Degree College Bhaderwah from the last five years is adversely affecting the studies of over 1200 students enrolled in the educational institution.
The college was established in the year 1954 and was one of the premier institutions of erstwhile Doda district. It would cater to the students of far-flung areas like, Bhaderwah , Bhalessa , Kishtwar, Ramban, Banihal , Marwah, Mahore, Gool, Thathri, Batote , Doda and other areas of erstwhile Doda district . Degree college Bhaderwah is grappling with the major problem of limited building infrastructure for conducting classes. College is facing daunting task of accommodating all admission seekers due to the lack of infrastructure.
Unfortunately, the previous governments did not show an interest in the problems plaguing the college. Though students have been representing their problems to the authorities and elected representatives from time to time, but of noe use.
Over 1200 students are pursuing their education in this college amid the poor infrastructure and educational facilities.
With the exception of some regular lecturers and a few non-teaching staff, the college is being run with contract lecturers and office staff from last ten years .
The students complain that they have to bear the brunt due to lack of space, as they have to sometimes attend the classes under the open sky.
The students said that the Higher Education department should fill all the vacant posts in teaching and non teaching categories in the institution at an earliest.
They added that no full- fledged library has been established in the college. "Though there are few books in a small almirah in the staff room, but there is no well established library where the students could go through newspapers and magazines and keep themselves updated about the latest happenings."
"We are forced to teach the students in these temporary tin sheds. How can we accommodate hundreds of students there," asked a staff member pleading anonymity, adding, "How can you expect quality education when there is no space."
Most of the streams are run by the teaching staff appointed by the government on the academic arrangement every year."Practical classes for Chemistry and Physics are seldom held. Just few classes were held during past months," claimed a group of students. "Key posts of Chief Librarian, Director Physical Education, Section officer and Accountant are lying vacant. Ironically, the teaching staff has to do the clerical job as well," rued a senior professor wishing not to be named. The college administration is also unable to introduce fresh subjects including Psychology, Public administration ,Philosophy and other subjects due to the non-availability of staff in concerned disciplines.The students urged the Higher Education Department to fill all the vacant posts in the teaching and non-teaching categories on the permanent basis at an earliest. "Four professors of different streams were transferred at the beginning of the academic session last year by the authorities, but they failed to send any replacement for them as a result of which our two academic seasons got wasted," the students rued.
The students also complained that there is no playground in the college due to which they are unable to undertake extra-curricular activities. "There are many students in the College who have performed well at the school level in various sports. But their talent is getting waste as no sports activity is being carried out in the College," said a student who has bagged many awards.

Unfortunately, the previous governments did not show an interest in the problems plaguing the college. Despite repeated attempts Education Minister Naem Akther could not be contacted. |
