Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Sept 4: At least six persons' sustained injuries after clashes broke out between groups of protesting youth and security forces personnel in the different areas of downtown Srinagar today.
Eye-witnesses told Early Times that as soon as the congregational Friday prayers culminated a group of masked appeared near one of the gates of historic Jamia Masjid and displayed flags as well as banners. The masked youth were displaying flags of Islamic State (IS) and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). They could also be seen carrying a large poster sized photograph of militant commander of Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) Burhan Wani. As this group of youth was busy with their 'job' groups of agitated youth appeared in the Nowhatta Chowk and started pelting stones on the police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The stone pelting was retaliated by the chasing and lobbing of smoke shells by police and CRPF personnel. The protesting youth carried out pro 'freedom' protests with some of them also raising slogans against the Government of India. The protesters raised slogans in favour of Islam, 'freedom' and militants. Some of these protesters could also be seen carrying the flags of IS, LeT and Pakistan.
Youth resorted to heavy stone-pelting on police and CRPF and engaged them in pitched battles. Clashes between the protesters and the police as well as CRPF personnel also spread to nearby areas. Pitched battles between protesting youth and security forces personnel were reported from the Saraf Kadal, Rajouri Kadal and Gojwara areas of downtown Srinagar.
Scores of teargas shells were lobbed by the police personnel towards the protesters with pepper gas also being used in order to quell the protests. The clashes between the two sides continued for several hours during which six people got injured. The clashes affected the business activities in the parts of downtown Srinagar while as the vehicular traffic was also hit.
Over the past few months it has been observed that groups of protesting youth would assemble outside the Jamia Masjid after the Friday prayers and resort to stone pelting on police and CRPF personnel. These youth would also display flags of IS, LeT and Pakistan. Holding the photograph of Burhan has added yet another dimension to the post Friday prayers.
Chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had appealed the youth not to carry out protests without any programme. However, his appeal has failed with groups of youth continuing to carry out protests.
