NC oldies train guns on Rana
On Sher-e-Kashmir's anniversary
9/9/2015 12:17:00 AM
ET Report
srinagar, Sept 8: Even as the National Conference today observed 33rd death anniversary of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the party leadership from Kashmir is up in arms against their counterparts from Jammu region, particularly provincial president Devinder Singh Rana, for having allegedly belittled the sobriquet which glorifies the NC founder as Sher-i-Kashmir.
The dispute has started over a small issue, which some senior leaders from Kashmir want to snowball into a big controversy. In an invitation to the media to cover the death anniversary in Jammu, the National Conference media cell has referred to the venue as S K Bhavan instead of its full name.
"Dear Sir/Madam, In observance of the death anniversary of Sher-i-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, a function will be held at S. K Bhavan, Jammu today, the 8th September 2015 at 11.30 AM.
You are requested to kindly depute your correspondent and camera crew to cover the function," reads the invite from the Incharge, of the party's Media Cell.
Insiders said some of the senior party leaders have taken it as a "deep rooted conspiracy against the glory of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah." "SK Bhawan instead of Sher-i-Kashmir Bhawan has been mentioned in not one but two successive invites, and thus it can't be taken as mistake," the party men said.
"Over the years there has been a conspiracy that Sher-i-Kashmir was intriguingly mentioned as SK by some. Though till now it used to be enemies of National Conference, unfortunately now our own people are becoming a part of this game plan," said a NC leader pleading anonymity.
The NC leaders said the party has always ensured writing Sher-e-Kashmir to every landmark dedicated in the Sheikh Abdullah.
Party insiders said the NC leadership in Kashmir which has been allergic to Devinder Singh Rana, party's provincial head for Jammu wants to use the SK issue as cannon fodder.
"For years the senior leaders of Kashmir who dislike Rana and consider him a hidden enemy of the party have been trying to catch him on the wrong foot. They have again found a topic to keep the pot boiling," the insiders said.
Sources said this morning at Sheikh's mausoleum where party men assembled for congregational Fateha Khawani, some of the like-minded party leaders held meeting and took serious note of the issue and apprised the party patron Dr Farooq Abdullah about the same. "The leadership has sought apology from Rana for the deliberate blunder and have asked Dr Farooq to convey it to Omar Abdullah," the sources said.
A senior leader said the role of Rana has been so dubious that PDP leader Nayeem Akhter last year referred to Rana as "architect of NC's debacle."
Pertinently the National Conference is often seen divided into two factions. One headed by Dr Farooq Abdullah who enjoys support of the party oldies, while the other faction is lead by Omar Abdullah who is supported by the young crop.
Among the senior leaders only Nasir Aslam Wani and Rana fall in the Omar camp, while the rest of the voices in the young camp are fresher's including Junaid Matoo, Tanvir Sadiq, Agha Ruhullah and Salman Sagar.
The party veterans want to prove young group wrong and often propagate thoughts that Rana and Wani were key people behind the party debacle in 2014 elections. The party veterans believe that Omar Abdullah's inexperience proved costly for the NC and that he should learn politics from his senior counterparts from Kashmir region.
