Early Times Report RAJOURI, Oct 3: There has been unrest among the majority community members in Rajouri town over the September 26 incident of thrashing of an alleged bovine smuggler by some people. On the September 26 evening, police headconstable Abdul Hamid's vehicle, which was loaded with a buffalo and other cattle, was intercepted by some people near Rajouri police station. Suspecting him to be a bovine smuggler, the angered people thrashed him and handed him over to police. He was later hospitalised. After the majority community members came to know about the incident, they held a demonstration and demanded immediate action against those who had beaten the alleged bovine smuggler. "While a case was said to have been registered against some persons, no action was taken against them," said a majority community member. Some majority community members Tuesday called on Darhal MLA and CAPD minister who assured them that action against the accused would be taken within 72 hours. "As police failed to take any action, the majority community members decided to close their business establishments, and not to ply their passenger vehicles on local routes," Shahid Dar, a local, said. Shops and other business establishments belonging to the minority community, however, remained open. Schools and government offices also observed a thin attendance. The majority community members said they would decide about their future course of action in case the accused were not booked by police soon. When contacted, Rajouri police station SHO, Inspector Yashpal said no arrest had been made as yet. Adequate security arrangements had been made today by police in old Rajouri town, Gujjar Mandi Chowk area and in the vicinity of Rajouri city to avoid any untoward incident. |
