Teacher-The Pillar of the Nation
10/4/2015 12:39:41 AM

A teacher affects eternity; He cannot tell
where his infuence stops'so writes a
thinker. Teaching is a noble profession but it is not everybody,s cup of tea, though it is the most sacred and exciting of all professions.We have examples of ideal teachers from times immemorial.We, in India have had a great tradition of ideal teachers since times immemorial. Dhronacharya, Vishwamitra, Vasishta were regarded as great gurus in the Vedic times. In the modern times,Dr. S.Radhakrishanan is adored as a great teacher in addition tobeing a great philospher, prolific writer and person par excellence in India and abroad.September 5, the birthday of Dr. Radhakrishanan is celebrated as 'Teachers Day' (Shikshak Divas or Guru Utsav) every year to pay rich tributes to this great teacher and philospher as also to inspire the modern teachers with the real spirit of teaching. Similarly,World Teachers'Day is celebrated on October 5, 2015 to celebrate the role played by the teachers in providing quality education at all levels.On this day,the teachers are honoured for their exceptional role in the field of education.
Teaching is a complex process of imparting certain skills and knowledge to the students in an easy and assimilable form.But the job of a teacher has never been so challanging and demanding as it has become now in the era of globalisation and knowledge explosion. The world,at this crucial stage, is in dire need of good and dedicated teachers who have the vision to develop skills and give real knowledge to their students to enable them to face the challanges of the fast changing world.But ideal and dedicated teachers are not found so easily and everywhere. It is really difficult to be an ideal and great teacher.
An ideal teacher is one who is well versed in the modern techniques and methods of teaching;who is sympathetic to the students and helps them in solving their problems in a friendly manner. He should enter the class well prepared and with well planned lesson with a smiling face and accept his students for who they are.He should always be sensitive to their feelings and strive hard to provide his students a congenial and emotionally safe atmosphere for effective learning. A good teacher is prepared to update his knowledge and hone up his skills required for effective transfer of knowledge to his students.
He should have a contagious enthusiasm for teaching and he should be able to instil a passion for learning in his students. An ideal teacher is one who is prepared to admit his mistakes and make amends for them; who is a man of honesty and integrity worthy to be considered as the role model by his students. A great teacher always inspires and encourages his students to learn new things and use them as tools to improve themselves.
He gives a personal touch to his teaching and knows the social and economic background of his students and takes measures to develop sense of self esteem and self respect in them. He enters the classroom with positive attitude and approach and is always unbiased in his behaviour with his students.
An effective teacher is one who recognises the fact that students differ in their interests, abilities and aptitudes and plans his lesson in such a manner that students of diverse abilities and background can understand and grasp it fully. A real teacher must know how to act in the classroom in diverse situations. He ought to add humour in the classroom,forge close rapport with the students and learn to laugh with them and share their joys and sorrows. A caring teacher has a tremendous impact in the classroom and he invariably commands repect from his students. An ideal teacher also makes use of modern teaching aids to make the teaching learning, an enjoyable and interesting process. He is well conversant with tools to be employed to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of his lesson through various tests. He provides equal opportunity to each and every child to exhibit their best. He should also aim at building a strong moral character of students and inculcate qualities such as humility, perseverance, dignity for labour, strong willpower,emotional stability,etc which should help his students in facing the challenges of the new world. An effective teacher is one who develops positive attitude and problem solving skills in students.
Therefore teaching is not an easy job.It is rather a complex and formidable job which demands selflessness, perseverance, compassion and devotion. It is not everybody's cup of tea. Thus, people with mercenary motives should think twice before adopting this noble profession. Only those who have a knack for teaching; who are creative, caring, compassionate and have positive outlook need to enter this sacred profession to produce the most valuable resources i.e. the human resources of our country, who are the future custodians of our great country. The following poem by an anonymous poet amply brings out the importance and challanges associated with this noble profession:-
Dare not to enter,if you love not teaching,
For the way is steep & rugged is the road
Thorns & thistles strew the path;but,
Fragrant blossoms to cheer you on!
Here no trumpets sound, no chariots wait,
No golden decorations are decreed-but
Yours is the joy of moulding our youth,
Of rousing the indolent, cheering the plodder,
Steadying the unstable, encouraging the eager,
Dark is the night, dreary the day;
Obstacles beset you all the way but;
Yours is the pride of kindling the fires,
That in later years shall banish;
Darkness for ever from your land,
This is your reward!
