Early Times Report RAJOURI, Oct 4: Unrest was witnessed for the second consecutive day in certain Rajouri areas over the September 26 incident of thrashing of an alleged bovine smuggler by some people. A bandh was also observed by some people in Thanamandi, Darhal, Kotranka, Manjakot and Rajouri city. On Saturday IGP, Jammu, Danesh Rana had meetings with the district administration and members of civil society to diffuse the situation. CAPD minister Zulfikar Ali too had discussed the situation with the district administration and issued directions to handle it peacefully. On September 26 evening, police headconstable Abdul Hamid's vehicle, which was loaded with a buffalo and other cattle, was intercepted by some people near Rajouri police station. Suspecting him to be a bovine smuggler, the angered people thrashed him and handed him over to police. After other people came to know about the incident, they held a demonstration and demanded immediate action against those who had beaten the alleged bovine smuggler. "While a case was registered against some persons, no action was taken against them," said a local. "As police failed to take any action, the people decided to close their business establishments for two days, it Saturday and Sunday," Shahid Dar, a local, said. Shops and other business establishments belonging to some people, however, remained open. Adequate security arrangements had been made today by police in old Rajouri town, Gujjar Mandi Chowk area and in the vicinity of Rajouri city to avoid any untoward incident. |
