SRINAGAR, Oct 4: PDP and BJP, coalition partners in the present coalition dispensation in the state, are said to have reached a tacit understanding to counter the controversy arising out of the ban on beef in the legislative assembly as well as council in the ongoing autumn session that began on October 3.
Sources told Early Times that both PDP and BJP had decided to play safe. Following the understanding, the two have decided not to allow the discussion on beef issue too soon in the assembly or the council. It is quite possible that the discussion would be held at the fag end of the session and as such the discussion is likely to remain inconclusive.
"Pertinently, the dinner meeting hosted by chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on October 2 led to an understanding between the legislators of PDP and BJP over the beef issue. During the meeting it was decided to counter the plan of action of the opposition parties on the floor of the house," said sources.
Sources said that since the beef ban issue has reached the Supreme Court as well it is quite possible that the state government would put forward the contention that as the issue is sub-judice it would not be prudent to discuss it. Although, the case is listed for October 5 in Supreme Court there are chances that the final judgment in the case would take some more days and by the time the autumn session of the state legislature may be over.
"The PDP and BJP would not like to lose out on their electorate in Kashmir and Jammu divisions respectively.
As such the parties have decided to play it safe. As the autumn session is brief, both PDP and BJP understand ruckus on the floor of the house would give advantage to them with both parties in win win situation," said sources.
Sources said that PDP and BJP may be poles apart as far as their ideologies are concerned, but the parties have decided to put up a joint face in the assembly and council as well. The leaders of both these parties have made up their mind to put a 'united' face in order to dispel the impression that all is not well with PDP-BJP government.
The issue of the rehabilitation of flood hit people in the state is also likely to figure in the autumn session of the legislature. Parties like National Conference and Congress are expected to corner the state government over the issue. As the first day was adjourned after obituary references it is expected that the remaining days of autumn session would be stormy.
