BJP snubs Jammu, commits UT status for Ladakh
10/5/2015 12:21:23 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has done it again. Those who voted for it last year, hoping that it would fight for their rights, have been again meted out a shabby treatment. Their hope was that it would respect its commitment made thrice that it will create political situation leading to the reorganisation of the state and grant of regional council to the region.
Had the BJP not committed a political instrument to the region, people of Jammu would not have voted for it. The BJP has not only went back on its promise that it would establish parity between all the three regions of the state but also snubbed the people of Jammu region by committing UT status for Ladakh region, which inflicted a crushing defeat on the saffron party in the last Assembly elections.
Though the BJP cannot fulfill this demand considering the fact that the Agenda of Alliance of PDP and BJP is silent on any such regime for the cold desert-Ladakh, its commitment for the UT status for the region is being considered in Jammu as a great snub for its constituency.
The critics of the BJP are not against the grant of UT status to Ladakh as it does deserve such a political position but they are feeling perplexed over the manner in which this party has been riding rough shod. "The BJP should have taken concrete steps to consolidate its Constituency in Jammu region and further expand it taking into consideration its long term political and electoral interests in the region," said Amrik Singh, a Jammu University Scholar adding that it has perhaps happened for the first time that any political party has punished and humiliated its own constituency in the manner the BJP did in Jammu.
What Amrik Singh said was shared by many activists and leading lawyers. "Why is BJP punishing those who had repeatedly reposed faith in it?" asked advocate Parvesh Salaria. He said, "It was for the first time that he and his entire family voted for the BJP keeping in mind the claims made and assurances given by BJP's top leaders of both state as well as those ruling at Center." "Today, I, like many others, stand totally disheartened and disturbed," he said and added that he will never vote for the ungrateful BJP in the future.
"The BJP has compromised with its stand on Article 370, Jammu's empowerment, Refugee Issue and surrendered Jammu's self-respect for the sake of power. It will never win any election in the region in the future. It has become so unpopular because of its biases in favour of Kashmir. Besides, depriving the people of the region of their due share of representation in the council of Ministers and other political and administrative institutions, the BJP's economic policy has adversely impacted the housewives as they have not been able to maintain their kitchens," pointed out Monika Singh, a Post Graduate housewife. She said that the BJP has created a sense of insecurity in the entire Jammu region by pursuing separatist friendly policies. She also said that "there was a time when I was against those who were demanding reorganization of the state, but now I am convinced that reorganization is the only option available to the people of Jammu region."
Interestingly, there are many Ravinder Rainas in the BJP, who also support the demand seeking reorganization of J&K, asserting that the people of Jammu region and Kashmir valley have nothing in common between them. Besides, they point out that while people of Jammu region are known for their pro-India credentials, the Kashmiri leaders do not have any faith in the Indian system. "Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh represent different ethos. It would be in the interest of India if the state is reorganized and Kashmir dealt with separately," at least six BJP MLAs told this correspondent on the condition of anonymity.
It appears that the movement for reorganization is gaining momentum in Jammu region with each passing day and what has given a fillip to this movement is the commitment of the BJP that it would grant UT status to Ladakh.
