srinagar, Oct 5: After BJP's complete surrender to its coalition partner PDP, it's the Congress which is protesting against imposition of tax on Vaishno Devi pilgrimage.
On Monday, the Congress launched strong protest in support of two adjournment motions before both Houses of the State Legislature. One motion was on the issue of denial of adequate relief and rehabilitation to the people affected by last year's devastating floods.
The second motion was on the issue of imposition of service tax on the pilgrims visiting Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and other religious shrines in the state.
The second motion is significant, given that the BJP, which is part of the PDP-led coalition Government in the state, has maintained a stoic silence on the issue of imposing tax on the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage. The BJP's silence is particularly painful because the party has been voted to power by majority of the Hindus in Jammu region.
Meanwhile, members of the Congress raised the issue when the proceedings began in both the Houses and they pressed their motions to seek adjournment of the business in each house in order to discuss these two issues of public importance upon which there is large scale discontentment and unrest amongst the people in the state.
The Congress legislators stood up to lodge their protest urging the chair in their respective Houses to take up their adjournment motions and displayed the issues contained in their motions which they demanded to be taken up for discussion immediately, said Congress chief spokesperson Ravinder Sharma.
Meanwhile, the Congress members in the Legislative Assembly have submitted an adjournment motion for Tuesday to raise and discuss the issue of agitating youth including daily wagers, need based workers, ITI workers and others who are holding protest and demonstrations on the roads for the past several weeks in support of their demands for regularization and regular payment of wages.
"The Congress has sought the adjournment of the business of the House in order to raise and discuss the issue of these agitating youths as the matter is of urgent public importance," said Sharma.
He said in the Upper House an adjournment motion has been moved to discuss the issue of Public Distribution System (PDS) in the state.
"There is a great resentment amongst the people over the faulty PDS and the failure of the Government to ensure proper and adequate supply of ration to different parts of the state," Sharma said.
He said the Congress members would request the chair to take up the adjournment motions in their respective Houses on Tuesday as they have submitted their respective motions on Monday.
