Anticipated shortfall in power budget likely to create electricity crisis in J&K
10/7/2015 12:26:57 AM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 6: A huge gap between the annual budget earmarked for electricity purchase to cater to the needs of State and anticipating total consumption till the end of this financial year is all set to trigger a massive power crisis in Jammu and Kashmir in ending months of this fiscal.
According to reliable sources in the Power Development Department, the State is going to face a shortfall of around Rs 1800 crores for additional power purchase in this year as electricity worth two third of the total budget of this year has been consumed in first five months of 2015-16.
Pertinent to mention here that the State Government has earmarked a budget of Rs 3785.50 crores for power purchase during the year 2015-16.
However, as per the records of PDD, electricity worth Rs 2800 crores has been consumed across the State by the end of August 2015. This consumption of five months is almost two third of the total power budget earmarked for twelve months of this financial year and the trend shows that total electricity consumption by the end of this year is anticipated to be of worth Rs 5600 crores, sources explained.
Since the gap between the earmarked and anticipated budgets is approximately Rs 1800 crores, the State Government is all set to face a huge problem on account of this shortfall, said a senior officer of the PDD on the condition of anonymity.
Even as the phase-II of Baglihar hydroelectric project is going to start power generation soon providing some relief to the State Government, sources said that the shortfall would not covered despite addition of 40 percent power from the new resources.
As the State Government is well aware of the anticipated crisis, sources said that some harsh measures to check transmission and distribution losses because of power pilferage in connivance with the ground level staff, are likely to be enforced besides more shut downs in the coming month.
