GDC Thanamandi : 40 days left for exams, syllabus remains untouched | Is Govt serious about higher education in rural areas? | | Bijay Charak Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 8: Despite verbal assurance by the Education Minister to place teaching staff at Government Degree College (GDC) Thanamandi "within couple of days," the college sans staff, even as 40 days are left for final exams and most of the subjects' syllabus remains uncovered. The GDC Thanamandi was set up in 2005 with 23 sanctioned posts of associate professors, assistant and lecturers. At the moment, just four lecturers and a principal are running the show in the college. On July 31, the contract of many contractual lecturers got expired. The contract was not renewed; neither did the government make any arrangement for appointing new lecturers. "It was government's responsibility to engage new lecturers if it did not intend to renew the contracts of previous lecturers so that the students didn't suffer. But till date no lecturer was appointed in GDC Thanamandi," sources told Early Times. Rayees Ahmed, a student, said the college has modern infrastructure and good strength of students. What is lacking, he said, is the staff to run the college. The college offers Science and Arts streams, but except Urdu, Computer Science, Geology and EVS, no lecturer is available to teach other subjects. Another student said, "On the one hand government says that education is the fundamental right, but when it comes to put words into deeds, they have nothing to offer. We have been protesting for the last one demanding teaching staff at GDC Thanamandi. Who cares?" GDC Thanamandi's principal BB Sharma said he has already discussed the staff shortage with higher authorities "but no response had been received from them so far." Shakeel Ahmed Mir, block president Congress who on Monday led a protest demonstration and warned the State Government for large scale protest demonstrations if the government failed to send the required staff soon, said that only two months are left for final examination and even today no classes were held for several subjects in this college. |
