Early Times Report

Srinagar, Oct 8: This tech-savvy cop was known for his online surveillance and as the fate had it his death has left him immortal on internet.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police Sub Inspector Altaf Dar, who Wednesday fell to bullets, while chasing Kashmir's most-wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operational commander Abu Qasim in north Kashmir, has literally gone immortal online with his colleagues paying glowing tributes to the departed soul.
For Senior superintendent of Police Jammu, Uttam Chand, Altaf's death was time to change his profile picture on the Facebook. Uttam Chand has replaced his picture with that of Altaf Dar.
The DGP K Rajendra posted on Police Media Center Kashmir Page: "Today we lost one of our most outstanding and expert officers in Counter Insurgency , SI Mohammad Altaf, in an encounter. The intelligence was generated by him and was personally leading the operation in which he attained martyrdom."
"His martyrdom should further strengthen our resolve to wage relentless battle against terrorism and uproot this scourge from our State to bring total peace in the state. May God Almighty grant strength and courage to his family to withstand this irreparable loss RIP our fallen hero Altaf," the DGP added.
DIG Ahfadul Mujtaba turned nostalgic of his relation with Altaf, as he wrote: "SI Altaf came in contact with me when he was a constable and I was SSP Srinagar in 2006. He had a great sense for investigation and even as constable contributed a lot in the investigation of Fake Encounter case of Ganderbal."
Mujtaba added: "Everyone speaks a lot about his counter terrorism operations and rightly so, but mainly he remained an investigator to the core. He contributed a lot in notorious murder case of Asrar Mushtaq and also Nazir Mahajan murder case who had been killed by his son."
The DIG added, "Though he rose in ranks for his anti militancy operations but all his operations basically were investigation based. He was one of the best police officers I have come across. May his soul rest in peace."
SP Imtiyaz Imtiyaz Hussain posted "The brave, the brilliant, one of the best among us. Rest in peace our ?#?Hero our ?#?Martyr SI Mohamamd ?#?Altaf. Your unparalleled services to department will be remembered forever. Your martyrdom inspires us. Salutes and respects from ?#?JandKPolice."
DSP Feroz Yehya posted "Only a few can feel how we felt and what we lost in you !!! RIP AD ! You shall live in us!!!" For the Police PRO Manoj Pandit it was time to use Watsapp to pay glowing tributes to the departed soul even as he equally forwarded messages of senior police officials.
Altaf had earned the sobriquet 'Altaf Laptop' within the police for his unmatched success in online surveillance of militant activities since 2006. Heading the Srinagar-based Special Investigation Team (SIT) for counter-insurgency, with 40 members reporting to him, Ahmad had been tracking Qasim - a foreign militant with a Rs 20 lakh reward on his head - for long.
Sources said Ahmad was killed when he and his men were going after the militant commander in a private vehicle, following a tip-off from a source. "We suspect it was a source trap," said a top counter-insurgency official.
Ahmad had decided to carry out the operation on his own without laying any cordon, which counter-insurgency officials said "was a very casual approach."
The source was right about the location of Qasim, who was "already alert." Ahmad gave chase to Qasim's car near Gund Dachin area of Bandipora, 40 km from Srinagar. Sources said Qasim and other militants stopped Ahmad's vehicle and opened fire.
Ahmad, who was injured, was immediately rushed to the Army's 92 Base Hospital, Srinagar, where he died.
Elusive Qasim is behind several high-profile militant attacks in the Valley since 2012, including the Hyder Pora attack in 2013 that left eight Army personnel dead, attack on the Silver Star hotel in October 2012 and the attack on the BSF in Pampore in 2013.
